What if one were to buy a Hill hand pump and hook it up to something like a old power hacksaw I have sitting in the back of my shop? I cant see where the saw mech. pumping the handle would be much different than me pumping it..your thoughts suggestions..thanks!

Hang onto your money with buying that Hill pump, word from the SHOT Show is that Crosman will be releasing a lightweight, affordable, electric compressor capable of 3,500psi with an auto shut off. Didn’t get much more details other than it should be offered right around the same time as when the Marauder hit the shelves.
Fusion, you should look up the topic of ‘adiabatic compression.’ You seem to be tying together moisture and heat in your head, the two have nothing to do with one another. We have to deal with them separately as they have separate and different effects. O rings don’t care if there’s moisutre anywhere. Air reservoirs will explode when weakened by corrosion from moisture, and valves don’t seal when eroded as well.
O rings can actually liquify under extreme heat. I’ve seen it. Extracted one O ring and found it ‘peeled back’ and thought it had snagged something, but closer examination revealed it had been cooked at so high a temp from repeated high pressure fills (in a PCP gun) that it had liquified and flowed away from the groove under pressure. Even under the best of conditions (i.e., slow PCP filling), the temperature must rise a bit; this leads to a phenomenon called ‘heat cycling’ which is just a way of saying the O ring’s temp is raised near its critical temperature at which changes to its polymer makeup start to happen. Any polymer has a limited number of heat cycles it can go through before it changes irrevocably. It will usually become more brittle and eventually can no longer expand and fill the groove under pressure, this is why your PCP guns leak as they get older. The O ring I found in the above example could not be extracted from its groove in 1 piece. It snapped like a wafer into about 4 or 5 pieces when I tried to take it out of its groove.

how many pumps does it take for that 500cc bottle to fill around?
this is nice answered some of my questions,but was the hand pump not made so it was portable? I did sweat alil filling my first new bottle,damn whew… but after that, was all pretty easy,I also took the darn pump and stuck it outside in the freezing cold in between pumping,it really helps and pump works way better cold then hot. only regreat… not have something like this when I was a kid..lol
Surely the heat from the pump will increase the temp on the air being pumped In which will cause moisture to go into the air cylinder? Either way you still need to stop It or as you say the o rings will break down. Personally I’ve never had a problem with pumping by hand but when you have to fill the 500cc bottle from empty It does get a little tiring 😆

This is an old pic of my progress on my “auto pump”

Ive since then finished all the parts I needed but the welder I was working a deal on way back when fell through so I never got to finish it. Just last night I got the winning low ball bid on a Lincoln mini welder and when it gets here (and works ok) I will be able to finally finish my pump ).

here are some visuals for you to get started.

Not moisture or condensation. Those are bad for the airgun where the air is stored. The heat breaks down the seals inside the pump, which are a bunch of O rings.

Thanks Walt, It doesn’t take much for me to get mixed up 🙄 I know what your saying – the heat will be bad for the o rings on the pump, yes but still wouldn’t any moisture, condensation from the hot air hitting the cold air resevoir also be bad for the air res and corrode that quicker? Just another thing to consider when making one..
