Correcting barrel run out error?
What effects will I be seeing If the barrel run out Isn’t exactly on the vertical axis?
I had to have my 24″ re machined as It was wrong first time around and now the bore Isn’t running true to the center of the barrel. I have installed It pritty much so that the thickest part Is at the top and thinnest at the bottom but I think It Is still slightly out. Is It worth playing to get It spot on and Is It best to have It the way I have set It up, IE; thickest part at the top?
The groups arn’t what I was expecting hence this topic. I’ll run some groups at vaious ranges today (If the weather stays niceish) and post the targets up for you to see.
Pabs If you’re reading this; After saying I wasn’t getting a bottle I picked up a new rifle and one came with that. You were right 😆 They are great for testing and quick refills. The guy that fills them Is about half a mile away from where I work 😀 Only problem Is I’m getting lazy and not using the pump at all now 😆

Good scope, though I mostly only use it on x10-18 !
Eye relief is real tight past that.
Good repeatable clicks, bombproof(I lug the rifle about in the van with no case) and lots of extras.
It’s taken a while and yeah, I’m just pleased to have found It at last 😆 I’d only heard of the MTC on the forums but went to a gamefair and had a look through one and was blown away at the quality of optics. I looked through some bushnells too, Not the 6500 series as they are out of my price range and to me the MTC was better. I’m sure I looked through the 4200 and wasn’t that impressed by that.
Have you tried the vipers Pabs?

Well the other scope Is a go! 🙂 The conditions had changed alot since earlyer and there was a heavy cross wind so I’m pleased that 3 out of the 5 pellets hit the bull. I’ll be out again later or even tomorrow If the conditions are better to see what the rifle can do. I’m suprised I managed to kill anything with It actually seen aswell the scope was that bad 😆
Here’s the bad scope on my rifle with a rabbit I took out at about 40 odd yards. I knew I was good but even with a knackerd scope, JK 😆
I’ll report back when the wind calms down and I get a chance for some more groups.
Yeah I’m running the tri rail only reason Is that I’m also running those overly large regulated HPA tanks so It’s a terrable position to shoot In without It. Even with the tri rail i’m using high mounts and that’s only just high enough.
Well that was easyer than I thought. Hawke scope on the S400 = not good. Suppose It could be good In that I could of possibly found the problem. I think it is that scope that Is gone. It was shooting low so I asdjusted 20 clicks up and It took It about 1″ up maximum. I kept clicking It up till I ran out of adjustment and It was still shooting way too low. The horizontal adjustment wasn’t much better either.
I’ll try the origional 4-12×40 that was on the S400 on the Airforce now and see how I get on. Looks like I need a new scope anyway 😕 I’ve been looking at the MTC range for a while now even more so since looking through one and seeing the optics were real quality for the price,I just couldn’t justify buying another. Least now I have an excuse 😆
I got rid of my tri rail and all of a sudden all kinds of problems went away…..
I would try without shims first. You only need them if you run out of elevation adjustment. Also if you have a tri-rail try getting rid of it. Mine was causing me all kinds of grief.
Thanks Metal head. I’ve just put the scope that was on the airforce (hawke 6.5-20×50) onto the trusty S400 so will rattle a few shots off now and see how we get on. If I’m getting good groups I’ll try the scope that was on the S400 on the Airforce. It’s only a cheapy 4-12×40 but I’ve never had to rezero that once while It’s been on the S400 and It’s had some abuse.
Another quick Q, My hawke scope was shimmed at the rear whilst on the airforce. Will I need to shim the 4-12×40 on the Airforce too?
Yep sounds like a scope problem. With an off axis barrel you can still shoot tight groups, the problem is maintaining your windage zero at different distances. For instance say you zero @ 50 yards with an off axis barrel, at 25 you may shoot right where at 75 you’d be hitting left.
Here’s some I’ve just ran off. As you can see there pritty shit! All groups are 5 shots (even though there’s only 2 pellets on the 45yd target 😆 ) All targets have the 1 screwhole at the top as this Is how I fix them to my back stop. Range Is at the top left corner apart from 1 target which Is my zero target. Fresh fill of 2900 PSI.
Here’s the zero target. First shot was right underneath the bull I adjusted a few clicks up and It shot to the right, WTF? I then left as Is as It started to rain.
And here Is an old one I shot. I think this was with the same set up but not 100%
With me adjusting the scope on the vertical axis and It ended up moving the POI right, I’m wondering If the scope Is on the piss??
