Q:

Coyotes! Need Help!

I have one of the old Condors in .22 with the spin on tank (not spin lock) with the full flow valve. I’m currently using the TalonTunes Quick Change Top Hat with the smallest restrictor shooting JSB 18gr. at 750 fps for small pests. That’s all I’ve ever needed up till now. But I recently noticed lots of Coyotes within 100 yards late at night. If some of you (with more experience than I have) can recommend a pellet, what size restrictor, what PW setting to produce humane kills on Coyotes within 100 yards I would much appreciate it. I need 40+ FPE knock down power without sacrificing too much accuracy. I don’t think JSB 18 grains will do the job. I tied 18.1 JSBs at high power and they won’t group inside 4 inches at 50 yards, even with a freshly cleaned barrel. I need a hot .22 cal. set up that will group within 1 inch or better at 75 yards. Any suggestions?

I’m willing to purchase a .25 barrel if absolutely needed. Just please suggest an accurate setup in .25 cal. to get me started and save me a lot of trial and error. I’ve seen some of these Coyotes within 60 feet of my back patio late at night. It’s a bit unnerving. I want them GONE!

Can anyone help and save me some time and effort?

Thanks in advance for your trouble.

Here’s an update:

Turns out that I was hitting the coyotes with 18.13 gr. JSBs and mortally wounding them and didn’t realize it. Two days later, the buzzards and the bald eagles were eating their carcasses out in the bean field. That’s how I discovered them. The coyotes are gone! But I received a brand new .25 cal barrel from Tony in lightening speed, along with the pellets and slugs that he recommended. On the day that I received them, I sighted in my Condor with the new barrel and the 37 gr. hollow point slugs that he sent me. WOW! One shot to zero the ATN X-Site II followed by a half inch 3 shot group all in the black at 50 yrds. Way better than I had hoped! Since then I’ve dispatched several “critters” that eat my fruit trees and my tomato plants. They’re gone too! Should a new batch of coyotes ever wander into my area, I have every confidence that they won’t wander out of it.

Right after I wrote my original post, the realization hit me that the job required at least .25 cal. I called Tony right away and ordered a .25 cal. barrel and asked him to send me a couple pellets to try. Tony dropped what he was doing to fill my emergency order. He stroked my new barrel for a couple bucks extra, then he boxed it up with a tin of 33.95 gr. JSB Heavy MkII’s and a tin of 37 gr. hollow point slugs, and he threw in 2 new o’rings for the breech, and he got it all in the mail that same day. Now that’s what I call service!

Today I hope to set up the chronograph and get the dope on this new setup. I’ll check back when I get it done. But until I do, I know that I’m good to go for anything within 50 yards at least.

Thanks Tony, for processing my order so quickly. I haven’t yet tested the 33.95 gr. JSB Mk II’s, but I’ll soon be ordering more of those 37 gr. hollow point slugs. I’ll post the dope on this setup as soon as I get it done.

Thanks also to all who responded.

onebaddj what distance are you taking them at?

Oh my god this is right up my ally!

So a 22 cal condor with 24 in barrel need to produce at least 70 fpe with a slug the will NOT blow through the target. Yotes are tough and will survive with a clean little hole blown end to end. I had one i shot downthrough the neck and out the lower check broke the shoulder and lived. She showed up againg and lost to the crainium shot.

At a minium you will need ej 32 gr pellets, 3400 psi, wide open tt qc top hat, heavy hammer and power spring. So now that the power is good you need a .030 washer to flatter the power curve and make for 3-4 solid shots. If you really wanna start cruching yotes contact john at pelet garden. He make hp 45 gr slugs that smash yotes. I am up to 13 off my back porch. The key ls are super quiet, good night vision and a slug tha willl hit accurately and dump its energy. I love hunting yotes. Oh and w ding donger. It gos off grab the gun.

Thanks guys.

Right after I posted my original post, I contacted Tony and ordered a .25 cal. barrel and a couple tins of .25 pellets that Tony recommended. Right after my original post, common sense kicked in and I realized .25 or .30 would be required. Maybe I should have ordered a .30 instead of .25. Live and learn, I guess.

I’ll let you guys know how I get along.

Thanks again,

Coyotes are pretty tough beasts. At 20 yards with good shot placement you have a decent chance of a quick kill with 18g 22, but it’s not guaranteed. They have very hard skulls, and being just a little off creates the possibility of a bounce. Heart/lung shots can work, too, but there is a very high possibility that even with a good shot the coyote will run away, leaving you to wonder whether it will die or not. For longer shots (50-100 yards), you should definitely be considering 25 or 30 caliber. It’s been a while since I have had an Air Force gun, but I get good results with JSB 25 heavies at longer distances, so my suggestion would be to get a .25 barrel and try to tune it up for the JSB heavies.

Oh, and coyotes are not dumb – whatever you do that doesn’t work will make them smarter and harder to get rid of.

First off,, I’m not as experienced as many others here that should add their experiences, but, I choose to offer my thoughts regardless.

Shot placement is absolutely imperative on a tough coyote even with a firearm, and even then humane kills (may not) come easy. With your Condor, head shots, better yet eye or ear, and that doesn’t give you a big target but you will definitely get its’ attention and hopefully a kill.
Ammunition…my Condor shoots the 18gr best, have done only a little experimentation with heavier 21-25-34gr ammo along with limited power wheel changes. I found that the 34gr jumbo beast JSB at a 5-5 pw and 2500psi will shoot 840fps and still be accurate as the 18gr zeroed ammo but lower by inch or so at 35yds. I believe that’s the ammo you should be using for ‘yotes. But it will take experimenting, along with most likely your larger tophat insert and higher power wheel settings.

You also mentioned about non-grouping 18gr “with a clean barrel”,, that clean barrel may be the problem. Allow your barrel to foul, it should get better the more shots through it, leave it that way until the accuracy goes away,, which may be several hundred shots or more of quality ammo.
Good luck, hope to hear more of your hunting.
