Q:

Cricket .177 tuning

Dear FRIENDS ;

I have a new cricket in .177 shooting at 950fps . Tried to to reduce it to 890fps by adjusting the HST. Now it’s shooting L886 H915fps . Do i have to adjust the reg to get lower spread?

Thanks

I’m no expert, but you might have a leak in your regulator and need to replace the o-rings. Or the vent hole to atmosphere is blocked. Don’t think it’s anything that’s specific to the .177 cal.

POI shifts could definitely be because of the fps is jumping around, but you can check if your barrel properly centered and tightened correctly in the frame. Ernest has a video for this too. It”s always a good idea to try without the shroud when having accuracy issues, to rule clipping out.

I’ve also noticed that if I tighten the stock screw too hard, then the tube starts pressing against the shroud and I get accuracy issues. In fact, I can’t really tighten the stock screw as much as I’d like before the stock hits the tube and start pressing on it. I’m thinking about sanding the tube recess down in the stock to get it really free floating and to be able to tighten the stock screw properly.

Where did you get the Cricket from?

What kind of Extreme Spread are you getting?

You might want to dial the valve spring tensioner in even further than standard setting, if you’re using a lower regulator setting.

I’m at 7,4 fpe and 640 fps with my Cricket .177 Standard and I’m getting 8 fps ES. My mods include polished hammer, softer hammer spring (Ernests “medium” spring”), transfer port sleeved down to 2.0 mm, regulator at 80 bar, VST at 3 turns in from spring contact. Would love to get lower ES, even at the expense of shot count, if anyone has any ideas. Waiting on a reg tester, then I’ll take the reg apart and polish the discs and stem.

ES became crazy jumps up to 60fps . I know there is something wrong with mod or with reassembling the gun back together.
e.g i fill the gun and shoot a sting, starts at 850 then creeps up to 920, then i give a rest for 2 min , shoot again and the same thing happens again the fps goes down to high 800,s and goes up to low 900,s.
The POI shifts to 4 directions almost an inch wide from a 20 yards indoor range.

I hate to bother Ernest again . He replied couple of PM and i know he is a busy man. I just hope he makes a special video for cricket in .177.

Best regard to all✌️

Hi Losdrivare;

You were right with second part of the message. The HST was stronger than the valve pin. I dialed in the valve retainer two turns after spring contact, as mentioned in Ernest video. Now it’s holding air but the fps still jumping around.

Thanks Ernest . I do appreciate you help

Thanks Pippo . And yes , i am sure Ernest is the one when it comes to tuning and troubleshooting.

Cheers..

Your valve pin might have broken. The older ones were made in delrin and are prone to breaking. The new ones are made of aluminum.

What is the serial number of your Cricket?

EDIT: Another possibility is that your hammer spring preload gives higher pressure than the combined pressure of your regulator pressure + valve spring, so the valve can’t close. If your valve pin is intact, then try increasing your valve spring tension.

Hi Adham,

sorry I don’t know anything about tuning but I’m sure with Ernest’s guidance you will get it right πŸ˜€ .

I just wanted to congratulate for the airguns in your signature….

I think those ones loving .177 at 12 ft/lbs in shorter version (not as short as the Cricket Compact though) would be very pleased withe the HW100 TK as well (the 31 cm barrel version).

ATB

I made reg adjustment. Then while shooting the air gushed out through the barrel!!
Was so scary πŸ™‚ i don’t know what went wrong? Is it something to do with the hammer?

1/4 turn CW at a time then check highest speed at that pressure with HSTA.

Thanks Ernest.. So i should bring back the HST as stock and turn the reg cw to the max?
And fine tune with the HST?

Yes, I just tuned a .177 compact this morning, I lowered the reg pressure to max out at or about 900FPS 10.3g.

HSTA is for minor adjustment only if you want a tight string. lowering to 60fps is to much.
