Q:

Cricket scope help needed

OK, please be patient with this … I’m pretty ignorant when it comes to scopes.

I currently have a Talon SS that I purchased with the Airforce 4-16×50 scope. It does everything I need (i.e. I’m no expert).

Now I plan on getting a Cricket, and I’ll need a scope (& rings), but there are so many choices and features that it is bewildering.

I plink and shoot tree rats, out to about 50 yds, and would like a relatively small & light scope (to match the Cricket Standard), with roughly a 4 to 16X zoom. I would like to spend ~ < $300. I realize I should not penny pinch on a scope, but that’s about all I can afford (I actually would like to spend less).

Please does anyone have any advice on good scope / rings set in that range? I currently see Nikon’s on sale, and the 4.5-14X40 Buckmaster for $200 (but I believe parallax is only adjustable to 50yds?)

Any help will be appreciated.

And what about Hawke Panorama EV 4-12×40 AO ? Is it good scope for Cricket/Matador?

I would go for a small scope for a small rifle.

Unless your hunting fleas, you don’t need the 24 and 30 powered scopes. I shoot MOA at 212 yards with 14 and 15 powered varibles.

Your right on track to get a $300.00 scope, on glass you truely get what you pay for and probably soon you will see why most of us old mustache petes don’t have Air Force scopes on our rifles.

The Nikons are good scopes, but for hunting moving game like squirrels under 50 yards I would prefer a scope I do not have to focus for every shot, I mean you have it on one of the slickest, fastest handling rifles around, why hamper yourself with a huge heavy scope that has to be focused for every range?

That also is why I would never ever have a adjustable paralax on a big game scope, you just do not have time in the field for focusing scopes.

If you were talking abut a FT rifle it would be a different set of parameters, and then a paralax adjustable scope would fit your needs.

Get a small quality US made scope that has a non adjustable paralax to around 50 yards, like a Leupold or Burris designed for rimfires.

Thanks so much for the input!

My tendency was to just buy a smaller scope, and purposely try and get low rings to keep the scope as close to the barrel as possible.

What I’ll do instead is wait for my Cricket (due this weerk) and try my Airforce 4-16X50 on it first … judge the size and height for cheek weld, and then decide if I need a smaller scope.

On the rings, I had to use a high set to get a good check weld.

I have the 6-24X50 version of this scope, and love it. It’s under 300. I’m also addicted to side focusing scopes.
