Cutting stock.
What do you chaps use to cut stock? I don’t want to spend money on a dedicated saw, so I’m thinking of a grinder with a saw-blade in place of one of the grinding-wheels? Even that’ll be a PITA, I’m running out of space on the bench for fitted tools (already got a vice at the right end, the mill will be going on the left end).

I’d prefer a band saw, but for now have a benchtop miter saw w/ 14″ abraisive blade that does the job well enough. Picked up brand new for $70.00, so can’t beat the work performed vs. investment vs. space required.

All i had to do was fit a single phase motor ( which i already had ) and i was in buiseness.

Get a horizontal band saw.
I use one of these mitre saws to cut non ferris metal plastic and wood, it has a tungston carbide tipped blade, with a tooth angle designed for cutting metal. This type of saw can be bought farely cheep from D.I.Y. stores like B & Q, but you need to make sure you have a blade suitable for cutting the material you intend to cut. I would not recomend fitting a circular saw blade to a bench grinder and hoping you’ll be able to hold onto the material whilst you try to cut it.

Jazus Sean, I need to cut wee diameters of alu and stuff, not Krupp howitzer barrels. 😆
That thing’s taking up a lot of space too, I don’t have that much to play with. £26 though, that’s got to be the bargain of the year. 😯

get yourself a wee bandsaw or a scroll saw they don,t take up alot off space and r the best things to use

Lang, I use a portable bandsaw. It’s about the size of a reciprocating saw but can cut much, much thicker and tougher stuff. Here’s one:

This is the exact model I have, a Milwaukee. The trigger is variable speed. You would not believe the size of things I have taken down with this thing. A friend and I once disassembled 3 large racks in a junkyard that was holding up something like 20 cars… whole cars. We cut the racks up into pieces small enough to haul out with a pickup truck using 2 of these bandsaws, about 20 blades, and a small honda generator for power. We didn’t use a plasma cutter because we had no power source for 240v for the plasma. Great investment, although I’d rather have a horizontal bandsaw. I have to find someplace willing to ship me a horizontal cheaply…. everywhere so far wants more for shipping than the bandsaw costs. But for portable jobs, this one cannot be beat and until I find a horizontal, I use this one all the time.
