Dehumidifying Rod for Gun Safe
I’m going to get a Dri-Rod/Golden Rod type Dehumidifier for my safe as I’m sick of heating used dessicant packs in an oven (when I remember). Anyone have a recommendation on brand?
Also, would it be ok to have one pretty close to the stocks on the guns due to space limitations? I assume these dont get too hot and it would be fine.

WallyWorld, I found it in the area of the clothes hangers, it is made for closets. I just noticed, one is made for boats and another for the bathroom. Shopping at Wal-Mart is like hunting for Easter eggs, and they always move stuff at least once a month 👿

Where do you get “damp rid?” I think the rod might be great for a gun safe but I need a solution for my money safe, it’s so full there’s no room for a rod… 🙄 OK, there’s a couple soggy documents in there…
I’ve got a golden rod in the bottom of my gun safe and it works like a champ… I don’t know about 150deg it is pretty warm to the touch but I can hold on to it…

i use these boxes called damp rid no heat or nothing it has crystals in it that draw out the humidity 3or 4 dollars a box and last for months in a safe
I coat the steel parts of my guns with BreakFree CLP, or the Antique/Collector’s grade which doesn’t have the solvent in it. I haven’t had a rust problem. I am here in L.A. where the humidity isn’t as high as it is elsewhere. We have anywhere from less than 10% to 80%. It’s been going up over the years. I have never used dessicant. I also have a blue steel S&W model 19 that lives in a leather holster. It gets wiped down with BreakFree and I have never had a problem with it…23 years. Get a BIG can; the 14oz aerosol is what I buy and it lasts for years.
Now I’m gonna go wipe down the collection. Thanks for reminding me to do that. 😉
70% humidity is higher than I have normally for most of the year and any kind of cladding on the inside would reduce available space (its a small safe).
I’d seen the 150 degree temp, my concern was due to the small size of my safe the rod would only be an inch or two from the back end of the stocks. I guess I’ll make a plinth for the guns to raise them up above the golden rod a bit.
Anyone have a dehumidifying rod?
with a quick check I read they run about 150 degrees and should be laid flat on the floor for best operation.
150 sounds a bit high for contact temps.
Spanish cedar is what humidors are made from and with a light circulation of air they maintain a 70% humidity level. Perfect for wood stocks and cold steel barrels.
It might be a little more work to veneer the inards but at least you won’t need to plug it in.

I think most all brands of gun safe dehumidifiers are all about the same. They tend to stay between 130 and 140f, except for the flexible plastic covered ones at 120f.
I’d stick with the Remington or Browning Golden Rod types that have a seperate cord and rod that you can plug in easily after you run the cord through the pre-drilled hole in the back of your safe. They have a regular power plug that goes into the wall socket on one end and the other end plugs into the rod kida like plugging in a cell phone to it’s charger.
Stay away from the small flimsy flexible flat type heaters, they aren’t worth the money you spend on them.
