Did I mention I’m a retard?
While trying to adjust the dials on my lathe to take out some of the slop (got all of it out of the top-slide, can’t seem to do likewise on the cross-slide) I discovered the graduations can be zeroed (independantly rotating collar). How long had I contemplated the difficulty of calculating distances/tolerances when the numbers got positioned arbitrarily according to where they ended up after one had dialed the cutter to the work.
Go ahead and roll on the floor etc, you won’t be laughing any harder than me. 😆

Today I have been mostly breaking four or five tips, a drill-bit and a parting tool. I guess that’s what happens when you choose an unknown piece of metal out of an old motorbike. It was all going so well until the coolant pump broke down (that wasn’t me, it just broke).
I can hardly wait for some backlash.

Can’t laugh too much myself though. My first exposure to the “floating dials” was on a twin facing brake lathe. I have never had any classes or professional instruction on metal working, but i still felt pretty silly when I figured out the dials could be “zeroed out” at any given point after setting the cutter. I ran that machine several months, always turning the knobs for the cutters by the Knurled part on the outside; one day happened to twist the handle while holding the numbered dial part with my fingertips, not touching the knurling……..the number dial turned and the cutter didn’t advance at all…..WTF ❓ ❓ ❓ . Took a few seconds to realize what had happened 🙄
