Ok for the harder slugs, I tried this on JSB pellets, too soft, even if you apply yourself. The turning motion will scramble the pellet head ever so slightly. Thought about something like this:
No turning motion, just light spring load.
If you really want to get precise, like slug sizing, etc., you might want to look into micrometers. I think that’s what Dyotat uses.
I think he said that it was handmade for him by an engineer/machinist he knows.
It’s basically a holder and a dial gauge.
That seemed quite precise.
I think a “dial thickness gauge” would do the same and could imagine to get good results with such a tool, as the clamping force is repeatable.
On the other hand, head size with a digital caliper seems difficult to me, do you manage to mesure down to 0.01mm with it consistently? I always doubt the result when I do…

same for me ,,, i always have doubt ,,,but i haven’t tried the expensive calipers ,,,or maybe still the caliper is not right tool for measuring the pellet head sizes accurately,,, i remember Tedholdover used a tool for measuring the pellet head sizes ,,,but don’t know where and how to find it …????

Calipers are not for measuring your target. They are for measuring depth on the regulator, Belleville washer width, and the valve stem’s length to name a few. These items require more than a ruler or a 10 dollar caliper. If shooting extremely tight groups is a goal you should also measure pellet head size and see what your barrel likes.
Well, for the 1-2mm level of precision, even a ruler would do.
Always depends on what you’re doing with it, for competitions they even use optical systems, as even a caliper would not be precise enough…
a 10 dollar digital caliper sure makes easy measurement no matter how the reviews say.
I am not running a Metrology lab… an error of within 1 or 2 mm is tolerable if I was measuring shot to shot distance punch on paper targets.

I rarely get two measurements the same with mine.
