Q:

Direct Flo valve with heavy .22 experience

Hello all.

I have been trying to build a backpack friendly TalonSS and to get the most out of it.
I have now a TalonP (direct flow) tank and my configuration is still 12″ barrel in .22.

My dilemma is still the hammer configuration.
Yesterday I tested the rifle with:
1) Standard hammer + direct-flo + 32.4gr Eunjin
2) Standard hammer + AF weight + 32.4gr Eunjin

In the first case, on power 12 I got about 640fps out of the 34.4gr.
In the second case I got:

a) 740fps on power 2
b) but when I moved the power to 6 and the direct flow valve got completely stuck on open and dumped 2000psi of air!
When I pumped back the tank it started at about 900psi after that shot.

I did not try again cause pumping ain’t too much fun.
I am not sure if the .22 is too small for all that air on higher power settings or what.
I believe the condor .22 has the additional hammer weight, but the valve is not the Direct-flo. So I am confused on how to configure the rifle.

Getting 740fps with the 32.4gr is pretty good for the 12″ barrel, I am just wondering if there is potential for more, or if I reached the pneumatic limitations of the rifle with a direct-flo + heavy .22

I would appreciate some input.
Cheers

Chris

Updates:

I had a chance to re-test the 14.3gr pellets with the TalonP tank on my .22 talonSS with additional hammer weight.

I got a nice string of 15 shots with an average on 910fps. (max 950 – min 890)
I am pretty happy with this for hunting. The fps spread is well within the 1″ target limit for my calculated MPBR up to 40ft.

Next step is to get heavier pellets tuned in.

Hi RiffRaff,

the EJ 32.4gr are quite tight, you are right. Sometimes it is hard to push them in.
I figured out the issue was a loose tophat.

I am still working on this build and hope to post about it soon.

Thanks for your help

Be sure to fully seat EJ pellets. Don’t leave the skirt sticking out at all. Get yourself a pellet seating tool with the small ball-end on it. The best investment for heavy pellets you will make it creates a consistent starting pressure so the pellet starts moving consistently from shot to shot. Same principle as crimping for powderburners.

Plus tank dump is common if the skirt is not seated with these guns so it’s a win/win.

thanks! I am going to do some more tests today.
It just sucks pumping so much, I really need to start saving for a scuba tank.

I will post more results

I dont think there is a specific top hat factory setting. typical settings you will see people use is .070 – .090 and I am sure there are some that might use a setting outside of that. I would put it about .085 and see what the velocity is and fine tune it from there.

I was retesting with the additonal AF hammer weight and I was getting ~920fps with 18.21gr Crow Mag.
I was very happy with this being on power 4. Then I noticed it started acting erratically and guess what?
The damn top hat got loose so now I am not sure what the factory settings is. :angrymob:

If anybody knows the factory top hat settings please help.

Cheers
Chris
