DonnyFL’s Sumo
I’ve got a lot of pictures posted of Donny’s Sumo in the Taipan subforum but not everyone ventures there so I wanted to post some quick thoughts and pictures of what I’ve been waiting for in an LDC. Sure, I almost went for the “Fatboy” and would have been PLENTY happy but it does have a bit of hobbyist manufacturing look to it. Note, I did not say amature-ish, but rather hobbyist. It’s far better than anything I can make from my garage, though I’m pretty handy with manufacturing skills and many tools. But the Sumo straight up looks like a professionally made product. In fact, it doesn’t just look the part, it IS professionally manufactured. Like something made by the same company as PB suppressors, but obviously these are for AIRGUN USE ONLY. I hate having to reiterate that fact but it keeps .gov out of our hobby, so mention away…
Anyway, I have a .25 Taipan Veteran and it’s rather quiet as it is from the factory. I don’t have decibel ratings / SPL’s because I refuse to post results from crappy cell phone apps and not sure I even trust my Radio Shack analog meter that Home Theater audio freaks such as myself trust in. The sound signature of our airguns pierces so quickly that I just don’t trust any meters available to me or the hobbyist. So all I can offer you is my subjective opinion.
It fu**ing works! To my ears there is a slight “crack” type of sound that comes from each shot. No, not supersonic crack but a crack none the less. And no, it’s not loud at all but I was after near-SILENT as is feasible for my backyard shooting. I’ll tell you what, I have a P-rod that I thought was really silent in .22 with much less than half the ft-lb energy of the Taipan that I thought was pretty quiet but this seems like a new level of sound suppression. I had wanted the Taipan to be at least close to as quiet as my Prod but it beats it in silence.
The innards, or otherwise internal skeleton is a mono core unit and it is wrapped with felt to further dampen the air turbulance of the COMPRESSED AIR. I had tossed around the idea of testing various materials but the felt just works marvelously so why waste time trying to improve as immediately I’d be faced with diminished returns.

For those who are new, depending on your airgun you may need to purchase an adapter to make it fit. In my particular case I bought an adapter from TalonTunes for $65. To me it was worth the price of admission.

Hey just got a Tanto for my BSA , that took it up a few notches. Dumped the screwed up factory shroud , now it looks like it should. Thanks again Donny !
I have donnys’ Tatsu on my Crosman 1300KT .22 cal. carbine and it really made my gun super backyard friendly , my wife could hear
me shooting from the back master bedroom sliding door before I had the Tatsu installed and now she can not hear anything at all and
has no idea that I’m shooting from the bedroom . It’s so quite that if you are 15 yards away you do not hear it at all . I love it , I can
shoot from my driveway and no one knows unless they see the gun , Sniper quite . :4: :biggrinn:

I got a Vulcan 177 coming in , I really do not want to put anything on the end , But if I do , The fat boy has a cool factor of 10 easy.
I got one on my 22 Mutant and 25 Veteran, Standerd 7 inch on the crickets I think, all of them Get the job done .
You pull the gun out with a fat boy and everyone thanks BANG, But it goes puff, :rofl: :rofl: :rofl: :rofl:

That’s great Donny! Seems that there are very good but limited choices for the airforce line. My personal preference for a 12″ 177, 22, & .25 barrel is one that doesn’t go beyond the TSS frame or up to 2″ beyond. Why not take advantage of the extra space in the TSS or Condor frame by baffling it?
I have adapters coming early April for Talon SS, Talonp Condors, Texans :0)
Donny should make this design insert for TSS owners that don’t have the sound-loc system.
Hey Donny seems at the time when I bought the Sumo ya hadn’t listed .22 yet. I’ll pick one up after my pocketbook recovers from buying a couple new PCP getting ready to hit the market.
mikstax, if you had a .22 Sumo, it will be a lot quieter for that .177. The caliber LDC you have is usually still very effective for one caliber down. But dropping down two caliber sizes you’ll noticeably hear a louder puff of air. I have a .22 Sumo on my .177 Cricket compact and this is the first gun I can say it sounds like it is broken. It is shooting 800+ fps but sounds more like 400 fps.
The human ear is said to be able to detect a 3 db change in sound level, – 8 dbl is substantial !
Hard for me to do without the SUMO on, once going super quiet.

The other day I screwed my Sumo for my .25 on my .177 mutant which tested 97dba before the test. Installed the Sumo dropped it to 89dba.
that video sound test = seeing is believing. That needle deflection was halved by the Sumo. :smilen:

Show off Greg!! I just got Donny’s Ronin for my .25 Vulcan2, boy does it make it quiet. Sure makes a difference at the cattle barn when I’m killing sparrows and starlings. Thanks Donny!!
