DPMS Panther LR 308
Range report;
I just bought a DPMS Panther brand new, and I took it out to the range today , wet snow and all 😛 .Let me tell you, this rifle is a crackerjack! It really surpassed my expectations.
I mounted my Leupold Mark AR 3×9 and my harris clone bipod, and out the box this rifle can shoot 1MOA and under @100 yards. It reminds me of shooting my Condor.
I started out with cheap PMC ammo for hitting paper and I was getting some decent groups considering the ammo. All in the kill zone . I put some Nosler match grade in and my bullets started kissing like lovers @ 100 . 😯 I could see the hole in target just get bigger and bigger through the scope 😆
I was a little shocked. You know, you read a lot of bullshit on forums of how good a rifle is or isnt. Well Im here to tell you, DPMS puts out the goods.
No Jams ,no Failure to feed , nothing. And It cycled so smooth.
It shot the way a rifle is supposed to shoot , reliably and accurately . Very accurately! The recoil wasnt bad at all,straight back, more than 556 but not bad.
Its heavy, about 9lbs, but so are most semi auto 308s with heavy barrel.

The rifle can shoot better than I can.
However, if your thinking of ever getting one the guy at dpms said the kits wont always work as good as the factory rifle, and they are all marked a K on the serial # He said most of the complaints come from people who have kits bought at gunshows.
Anyway, I didnt get to shoot long , the weather kept getting worse , I was soaked head to toe and the snow was falling hard 😀

yes the 24” bull is to much to haul in the wood s all day, there is a differance in if you can do it and can you do it, i could do it all day, but i wouldnt want too, you would want to go with a medium weight barrel, or a 18″ bull, i like the flutted barrels.
Thanks for the tips, gents. Those 24-26 inch heavy barrels, are they too heavy/clunky in field use, for, e.g. hunting? I’m over 6 foot and reasonably used to hauling weight around, splitting wood, etc.
If there’s a better compromise for hunt/accuracy, what do you recommend? The 9 lbs doesn’t sound too bad. Better than the 60+lb packs I used to hike with 😛 Hell, my Monster Maul( the original zotz) weighs 15 lbs. Man, that sucker blasts through some big wood rounds. Bet the Panther does too…if you need kindling!
Anyway any recommendations are well received. I’m talking to some of the local guys to see about how/where to line one up 😉

bogman ,they run about the same as good AR. I paid 1100, at my gun shop.
You can find them a little cheaper on line for like 950 or so. But you add in the cost of shipping and ffl dealer and your almost there anyway.
They make lighter versions too, without the heavy barrel if weight is a concern, and they make a lightweight version with 18-20 in barrel that didnt feel much heavier than an AR. for around the same price . I havent shot those so I cant say how accurate . but I heard good things about them.
you can get the sniper upper for it in 308 or 6.5 creedmoor. the creedmoore is an excellent round designed by long range shooters . the bullets a little lighter than the 308 weighs about 120-140 gr. but much longer , looks like a freaking dart to me 😛 . which helps to stablize it in flight better . It has a higher BC than a lot of rounds something over 500 -550 and is still supersonic at over 1000 yards 😯 and has almost the energy as the 308.
The upper is 24 or 26 inch heavy target barrel. its a bench rester , but its supposed to be “”the shit””
The recoil isnt as bad as you’d think. But Everybodys different. I didnt have any problems with . But I did have a jacket on . Its less than a 12 guage slug.
A recoil pad sure couldnt hurt, but I dont think its a “”must have””
bogman the dpms comes with teeth on the but pad,about like 20 grit sand paper , i dont think i want to shoot a 308 with just a t shirt for very many rounds. not that the 308 has much recoil but after a few rounds you know.
Hold over, congrats on the new gun! Nice looking, too. Looks sturdy as hell and good to hear you can kill flies at 100 yds!
If you don’t mind, what does one of those typically run? We’ve got increasing herds of deer out here and I’m looking for a good semi. It’s always good to get a real report from someone who actually starts shooting a new gun and doesn’t have any problems.
Do you think a shoulder pad would be wise during warmer weather; is the recoil enough to rub skin/bruise w/ a T-shirt on, after, say 50 shots? With a heavy coat, which you probably had on, that helps ease the impact/rub.
Got a gel pad after tearing all my skin off shooting a 12 gauge w/ Nitro mags, don’t want to do that again!
That bipod looks like it was made for the gun, perfect match.

i have not had the chance to play with 223 or 308 much, i have to drive 45 min to my range so i dont get to go any more. i used to live 6 min from my drive way from the range , but the city forced them to close and not renew there lease.
I used to shoot every week , and sometimes every day, rarely go more than a couple of weeks with out shooting, rifle handgun and shot gun. would go back and forth between them , what ever had my interest at that time 🙂

What kind of powder are you using PB? I have tried W748 (ball) & H4895 (stick), both work very well for 223!

hell yeah man , nothing like a bunch of ammmo , it turns me on !! LOL
I am in the process of breaking in a few of my ar’s , but after that i will load up a bunch of ammo, i will find a load tht shoots ok and fill a ammo can full of it for practicve ammo , and then i will have other fined tuned stuff for precision work.

Oh I hear that . 308 aint cheap either. Thats one of the reasons I got into air rifles too. I can shoot all day 😀
I have one in the DCM model in the 5.56/223 love it,just dont shoot it much anymore,too damn much to buy ammo..thus the reason I took up my childhood dreams of shooting air guns again..
I own several and love them to death, have nothing bad to say about em !!!

Im sure you could do it , its just a motherfucker if your really humping. I used to carry the 60 in the army , I hated that fucking gun 😆
Its fun to shoot and all , not so fun going up mountains or through the woods.
I havent got to shoot the Dpms long range yet , but from what Ive been seeing , I think it will do fine. It was in competition for the Armys designated marksmen but didnt get the contract.
But if I get the extra change this year , I would love to get the 6.5 upper for target and bench.
if your into long range shooting , read up about the 6.5 Grendal and 6.5 Creedmoore, flat shooters with good energy on the target.
For the money, I think this a great rifle. Better than I expected. Higher end 308 semi’s are going to run you 1500,1800,+ , Im not so sure the performance will be a whole lot better.
