Q:

Drozd Blackbird

I needed a indulgence gap filler to take the edge off my anticipation while waiting for the Haley .257 Scadalous, so I bought something I have wanted for a couple of years, the Drozd Black Bird.

A few years ago I had the little yellow Bumble Bee. I had seen them in catalogues and was tempted, but never acted on my impulse until a friend who trades a lot of guns got one in trade. Soon it was mine and I had a lot of fun with it and shared that experience with friends and family who all loved it.

But the little Yellow Bumble Bee had its faults and limitaions. It had to be fed often having only a 30 round magazine and only got 60 shots at most on a CO2 cylinder, the last few shots barely making it out the barrel, it took a long time to feed it and it was very finicky in 12 gram cartridge length even though I only used premium CO2 cartridges.

It was supposed to be getting 450 FPS, and I don’t doubt it, for it would bury BB’s a 1/4 inch into old dry fir deck railing. It was also more accurate than I remembered my old Red Rider of my distant childhood had been.

Alas I sold it.

Last week I succumbed to the urge to get the next generation, or maybe two generations later, the motorized magazine Blackbird.

I bought it from DrozdMax on line and had the 1200 RPM “wild Chip” put in, the Sergy board was unavailable, I doubt I would have paid the extra bucks for that option anyway which it is alledged to give 2000 RPM.

I got the male HPA nipple to replace the CO2 option which I have no use for at all. I have a Mako regulator I use for tethered shooting, so it seemed like a cheaper option, $100.00 cheaper than the 13/3000 regulated paint ball bottle.

I got it yesterday late, after dark, but I got it up and running, put a BSA laser on it and went to shooting. First thing I noticed is that it shot hard, although I was using only AA’s, it raised sparks up in the driveway shooting plastic bottles. The magazine was easy to fill with what is said to be a 900 BB capacity, the motor in the magazine whirs like a mini gun when you turn the power on.

The magazine has a plug in line that plugs into the gun and the 6 AA battery system powers it.

The “Wild Chip” changes the Blackbird from 1-3-6 shot options to 1-3-1200 rpm full auto option. DrozdMax installs these, I also opted for the full tune which is $75.00 and they go completely thru the gun, tune it and change out a few parts and add a rare earth magnet to the alignment system to overcome a embarassing factory flaw of BB’s rolling out the barrel.

This morning I fine tuned the laser and shot it for penetration on wet fir 2’X8’s, accuracy at 10 yards and shot it over the chrony.

Shooting over the chrony at 5 feet the Blackbird averaged 619 FPS with the Daisy zinc BB’s, which are the ones that are recomended, DrozdMax was very specific in not using the Copper clad BB’s. I was surprised by 619 FPS, becuase I am using just the AA’s, if I raised the voltage to 15 volts, I would be able to gain 20 FPS or if I got a longer smoothbore barrel which it is said gives some shooters up to 900 FPS.

That 619 FPS velocity translates 4.35 FPE and power to enough penetration on wet doug fir 2×8’s so that the BB’s are flush with the surface on a slanted board at 15 feet. Wet Doug fir is tough, so I have no doubt that it would penetrate the 1.5 inches in flesh that Chairgun states.

I then stepped off 10 yards and shooting with just the laser and no bags, I got a 10 shot group of 1.15, and a 3 shot burst group of 5/8 inch and a 5 shot burst group of 1 inch. The burst groups may have been a fluke, I shot them thinking I was on the single fire selector, but that was what they were. This was not a stable shooting platform and the laser was difficult to see, I think the 10 shot group would have been better under different circumstances, but this is how I have it set up for now.

My barrel is the stock barrel that is short and it is rifled, oddly enough smooth bore barrel are said to give better accuracy, but I was pleased on how it shot, garden slugs here in western Oregon are fairly easy to stalk, and that is the intended use for this rat a tat tat.

Now bad points. UPS was concerned they may have damaged the package, no, say it ain’t true, and right at where the rear sight was in the box, there was a big noticable dent in the box.

I changed out the open sight blade for the peep sight blade and broke the rear sight leaf in the process. It broke at where the screw for elevation goes thru, it is very thin there and plastic, so it could have been UPS or it could be a combination of me being ham fisted and the part being fragile. But I really was not putting much force on it, so who knows, if I put another sight on it it will be a red dot in additon to the laser, so I am in no hurry to replace that leaf though I will mention it to DrozdMax and see what they think. Not enough to file a claim with UPS for sure.

Either way I need another one as the laser is really hard to see.

This gun is NOT backyard friendly, I live on 11 acres and we all shoot around here, but the noise pattern is distinctly that of a machinegun and nervous neighbors would most likely call the coppers if rat a tat tats are not legal where you live.

The little gun really chews up potatoes and garden slugs and has had no jams or malfunctions in about 1000 shots so far.

I love it the way it is, but I have ordered the adapter to change the HPA tethered option I am using to a 13/3000 paintball bottle which is said to give you around 300 shots before a refill is needed. I will need to relieve the the stock with my dremel for the bottle to fit.

It is just a tad bit clumsy with a bottle in a pack. In the meantime I will use my leather skills to make a belt pouch for the Pygmy as I will use it for the Haley if I decide to go coyote calling.

Yep
I would like to go your rout someday
My Bumble Bee makes a mess out of empty beer cans
bet your beast could cut 1×4 in half no probs
If you can, lets see some vid of that bad boy in action

SAW

That is pretty cool Saw.

I got the 13/3000 1100 PSI regulated bottle today, the adpter gets here tomorrow and I will alter the stock so it fits.

I bought some AA Lithium battereis and ordered 10 Xeno batteries, I could not find any here in town.

It will be interesting how much the raise from 9 volts to 15 increases velocity form the 619 I get now.

here is my custom box I made for my Bumble Bee

Lead does seem to jam up in these guys…I have tried and I agree.

Don’t worry about your rifled barrel, as mentioned above..shoot a few thousand bb’s, and you will now have a smooth barrel. 😆 😆 :lol

Saw,

The stock barrels are rifled with both the old yelow guns thru the new Blackbird like I have and that is a problem, they don’t shoot that well with either steel BB’s or lead balls which jam in full auto so I have read.

Smooth bore aftermarket barrels shoot far better. Daisy zinc BB’s are the ones recommended.

So I would not loose too much sleep on that rifled barrel, it as I have read, was an idea better still born.

Go ahead and strafe those crows.

I killed a crow off my ex GF deck one day at tthe coast, he flew o
ff about 100 yards and landed in a Doug fir, about a minute later he fell out dead.

yeah sounds like fun!!!
I have a bumble bee older model, stock
have not played with it in a while, installed a BSA laser
as well
Sometimes I see a bunch of crows in some ones yard
Ha, would have to do a drive by, but the set up would be
the call, don’t know much about them, however I have
heard with steel BB’s you can mess up the barrel real quick
Especially full auto, defiantly a fun toy
Gotta break mine out, made a nice wooden box for her
with room for mags and c02

Have fun

On the moderator thing, the only real way to do it is with the JimC barrel kit and his adapter which replaces the end mount on the ventilated barrel shroud.
The major problem with using a moderator on these things is you need to keep aware of your gas pressure as otherwise you will end up with BBs impacting baffles and/or having BBs drop inside the moderator.
due to this I advise only using moderators with metal internals that can be disassembled to get stray BBs out…old BSA and Parker Hale units work well.

lots of old posts on MP661K regarding the N cell conversion…

I usually run mine off a small carbon fiber bottle with a regulator in a Ronin Ware black cordura carrier. The carrier goes on your belt and is a drop thigh style with a leg strap…just attach it to the gun with a JimC coiled hose and you are good to go

That site does work backasswords. Newer post are on the top, takes a little getting used to. Mp661k..is a good site as well.
Check those sites, I’m sure you can find many post on what has proven effective in the battery dept.

Have fun with the BB, I still have an old ugly stock yellow Bumble Bee…haven’t touched it in a few years..but It’s always ready to go, if the urge should come.

RS,

There is a lot there to remind one of a M10-11.

I wondered how they would work with a LDC.

I am having fun with it butt tehtered to the Pygmy and the Mako regulator, it becomes unwieldy in the Swiss Army bag I have it in. MOstly I just do a slug patrol with it around the house in the rain and then go inside, so the 13/3000 set up should work fine fo rme, then when friends shoot it I will tether it.

I am still looking for batteries to up that voltage, having said that 600 FPS on Kirklands is maybe all the power I really need.

I will try that site, the BB one I tried to register and was told they already ahd a ROchcreek and a Unrepentantsinner, which I seriously doubt, I think they just have a computer problem, but the site is also hard to manage in my opinion.

Thanks,

RC

JimC info should still be up on the Airgun Artisans website RC and he is the go to person for custom Drozd bits
I am running his 10″ barrel, ventilated shroud and his 1/2×20 adapter which allows one to screw any common Airgun moderator on the package…even at 800FPS mine is quite quiet.
I also have Jim’s push pull collapsable/folding stock

the voltage boost is achieved by switching out to medical N series cells

in my opinion, the best forum on the Drozd is to be found at http://www.mp661k.com
those cats are as queer for the Drozd as Hoot is for his Leyla Love. When I followed the forum regularly there were folks doing new valve sets, playing with Helium and super long smooth bore barrels, you name it. I suspect it’s also where Bakail snagged the notion for the Blackbird’s motor driven hopper feed mag as there were folks there working on exactly that at least a year or two before Bakail brought out the new Blackbird.

I don’t have much of an issue with the original Drozd mags, then again I have a kool half dozen of them.
for me the hopper feeds are bulky, noisy battery suckers that further uglify an already ugly gun…for me the original platform with JimC’s 10″ barrel package, push/pull stock and with full HPA mods end up about perfect handling much like an actual submachine gun mimicking even ROF and magazine capacity…really little different than a M10 Ingram .45

fun toys no doubt 😉

Roach,BATTERY JUNCTION.

Mr. Newbie,

I ordered the 13/3000/1100 Ninja tank. I wanted to keep the guns weight and profile, I figure it will give me enough shots for a slug patrol and still let me tether it when I want to really go rat a tat tat in long strings.

Right now I am using those premium batteries, you know the ones you get at Costco marked “Kirkland”.

I have been doing a lot of on line shopping to see where to get the best deal on xeno and the Lithium AA’s to run together.

RC

Taking the voltage up to 15V should help with the full auto long shot string.

Common RC suck it up and get a fanny pack to stick that giant Air supply in. Paintballers do it…heck our own Tofazfou wears a fanny pack.

Just don’t wear the fanny pack at the same time as the spandex shorts. No one will know 😆 😆 😆

Your gonna want to shoot that thing full auto..that is where the fun is.
your gonna need to suck up a lot of air. You have the shoebox and cascade system..you have the air…

Go with an external tank and hose in a fanny pack..and set the reg to shoot in the 1200-1400psi range..1600 is kinda pushing it.

Oh, yes, and please take pictures for us all. 😆

Roach, you need to install a Drodzmax or a Jim C barrel both are harded steel, stock barrel will be wasted in a short time. John @ JDS can build you a custom reg.& a 48 ci. HPA bottle setup & his regs. can always be shimmed.Have fun ,fullauto is addicting.

I see that JDS Airman sells a 22 ci tank that is around the same profile just looks longer. I am trying to use that stock that came on it.

I do notice that when the air in the Pygmy tank gets down around 2000 PSI on long strings the BB’s loose power.

You say that 25 yards is the maximum, so I can’t shoot groups on my 285 yard target. 😆

Yeah it is a toy pure and simple.
