Edgun Lelya Information?
I’ve read all of the threads on this site, concerning the Edgun Lelya, and all information that I can find on the net, there’s not a whole lot, and I have questions. Most importantly I’d like to know if Lelya can be tuned to shoot 18.1g JSBs at around 900fps? Even if this only yields 10 shots, that’s what I’d like. I’ve read a Russian review where the Lelya was set to 805fps average for 15.9g JSBs, for 26 shots, but I want 30fpe, or more, from 5.5mm JSB heavies. Also, I’ve watched Ed’s youtube videos for Lelya and am a bit concerned about the breach popping open at the shot. One video he has many Lelyas on a table, where he shoots them one by one and I noticed that he’s staring at the breach after shooting each one, presumably to see if the breach pops open. He’s speaking in Russian, so I haven’t a clue as to whats being said, but I’d really like to know what the deal is about this. Is it an issue, not a big thing, ???… I know that I had more than just this on my mind, but I’m drawing a blank, right now. I’ll add other questions when they come to me.

@Hoot I was not familiar with any of the history of the Lelya , or Matador either. That is a lot of information in your post! You have given me much to think about, and I sincerely appreciate the effort on your part to write all of that. I agree, now, that my desire for a really hard hitting Lelya may be a bit impractical after all. I’ll have to ponder all of your data for awhile. Perhaps a compromise is in order, standard Cricket or standard Matador. thanks a lot for sharing all of these thoughts.
@qpush That could well be. PCP may have different demands, but I shoot one upper 20’sfpe springer with a 9″ barrel that doesm’t suffer from accuracy problems. It will put all shots inside 1.5″ at 60yds. Since PCP uses lots of air to get projectile up to speed, perhaps bleeding off excessive air behind pellet, before exiting moderator, so that excess air doesn’t affect pellet flight adversely may be key. I don’t know. Thanks for sharing this thought with me.
You can probably tune the Lelya to shoot 18gr pellets at 900 fps, but your valve won’t last very long.
Remember that the Lelya is an extended version of the Veles, a .177 target pistol, tuned to shoot small pellets accurately at pistol distances. Ed then added a longer barrel and made it into a tiny carbine, 24″ and very light weight. It was never designed to be a full sized, full powered pcp rifle.
The Lelya will perform adequately as a .22 using the original internals designed for .177 caliber, as long as it isn’t pushed beyond it’s design limits. The same was true when Ed was talked into producing a .25 caliber Matador using the valve designed for a .22 caliber pellet, by that pervert “Old Goat”. The outcome was predictable. It performed as demanded, but it’s valve life was cut in half. That has since been corrected as the hobby has expanded into the larger calibers. The Lelya, however, has remained a pistol on a tiny bullpup stock. It is what it is…a fun little gun to shoot, within it’s limits.
You want to turn a volkswagon into a Corvette. You can do it, but you must realize you are going to eventually destroy it in the process. It wasn’t designed to do what you want.
If you want a short bullpup…either buy a short Matador, or a short Cricket, both of which are equipped to do what you have demanded of a lightweight pistol.

I cant remember having seen online reports of a .22 Lelya shooting at 900 fps… maybe it can be done but I think accuracy will suffer greatly with a pellet coming out that fast from such a short barrel.

I think your best option is Matador R3 Short. It will get you in the FPS you want and will keep it in a nice short package.
Tony actually has them in stock at the moment so there is no wait.
