Edgun Matador R 2.25
It’s been pretty slow here lately so I thought that I would show my new R2.25 as it is right now.
I finally got my Leupy modified BSA .25 cal barrel. It is 23.8” long and is .609” OD. Marmont Militia made the barrel scope mounts, along with another set that I have yet to try. A guy from work owed me a big favor and made the new front receiver block. The front block uses 3 set screws to hold the first 3” of the barrel. Leupy turned the first 3” down to .571”.
I just got the block installed today and wanted to try some shots but, it is just too damn cold and windy to do any meaningful shooting. It looks like I won’t have a good shooting day till next weekend.
I hope that the new breech block will hold the barrel steady enough that I can do away with the 2 barrel/air tube/scope mounts. If it is, I have 2 other scope mount setups that I am going to try next.
The groups that I am posting were shot with the Leupy barrel, using Marmont’s barrel holders and the stock Matador’s front breech block. I was trying to get the speed set at 890 fps, rotate the barrel and see if it had a sweet spot and try to get some good groups. I had Jim make the mounts for a .619” OD LW .25 cal barrel and they kept letting the .609 BSA barrel slip forward. Groups were shot at 32 yards. The winds were 18-20 MPH and swirling. The first 2 lower right hand groups were shot while sighting in. I hope that the new breech block setup shoots even better.

Not bad at all, Koljo! I hope mine will shoot somewhere near that good.

Oldgoat, this is what you should expect from a BSA barrel. Five 18.1 JSB pellets went in that hole at 36 meters (40 yards). The barrel was hand picked by John Bowkett himself for the .22 JB Special Prototype Hornet #1 that I am so lucky to own. This rifle made it possible for a late starter like me to achieve such results after only just one year experience in air gunning. Not too bad, eh?!

Thanks dvdrw. I should have taken more pics, I was in a hurry to get it together. The new breeech piece is just like the stock part with a 3″ extersion that is bored out for the barrel to slide into.
Jim also made me 2 parts that are basically the front barrel/air tube mount that has been cut in half. One half clamps around the barrel and has a dove tail to hold the scope rail. The other half clamps around the air tube and the trigger mounts to it. I will take some pics the next time that I have the gun apart.
Leupy told me that the stock Matador air tube/barrel clamps setup should have POI change issues as the air tube pressure changes. I have shot a LOT of 100 yard groups and I don’t think that I have ever noticed a POI change. Jim’s new parts will isolate the barrel from the air tube.
I have a lot of changing and testing to do! That’s OK, I have a Shoebox compressor and just got another 12 tins of JSBs in. 🙂
Very nice post. We are waiting for some groups and the schematics of the new custom parts. We all have lathe just begging for work in our garage or friends that owe us a big favor 😉

Well, it was too windy today to shoot so I went to the grocery store. Left the store and saw a buds Harley sitting outside of the local bar. Hadn’t seen him in a while so I stopped in to say hi. 3 beers and a shot later, I said that I needed to get the groceries home. Got outside and the wind had stopped.
Went home, put the groceries away and went to the range. I had had the barrel out and needed to sight in again. I have been using barrel mounts that Marmount had made me for a .619″ OD LW barrel. My Leupy BSA barrel is .606″ OD. The mounts didn’t hold the BSA barrel very well and I got POI shifts.
I got some .004″ shim stock and tried it to make up the difference. I did a few 50 yard sight in shots and then I moved to 100 yards. By then, it was dark and I had a flishlight shining on the target. I shot 3, 100 yard 5 shot groups. After the 1st, I noticed the wind starting to pick up. Wind was blowing right to left. I was using a bipod and padded adjustable rear rest.
Jim is making me a couple of new mounts for the Leupy .606″ barrel. My personal best, with the stock LW barrel is .660. The long averaged 1.3″-1.4″ at 100 yards. Not too shabby right now. I have a couple more things to try and Jim’s new mounts can’t hurt either.
