EDgun Matador R3, caliber .30, single shot
Here is some information about new EDgun Matador, caliber .30.
1. Length — it became longer for about 50 mm. due to a new moderator (the same thing will be with the long one)
2. Weight — it became a little heavier due to the diameter of the barrel 14 mm instead of 12 as it was before, but not critically.
3. Moderator — new design, eccentric, diameter 38 mm, no thread on the case, just two O-rings.
4. Sound — VERY, VERY comfortable sound, to my opinion sounds quitter then .22, I can hear only the hammer.
5. Pellet — JSB .30 pellet, weight 2.90 grams (44 grain).
6. Speed of the pellet — with the standard regulator (set at 160 bar) — 270 m/sec (886 f/sec).
7. The energy for standard is 105 Joles (77.4 Ft-Lbf) .
8. Accuracy — about 20 mm (0.75 inch) at 50 meters (55 yards). Below you can see the shots to the bear can at 75 and 100 meters.
9. Barrel — made by Lothar Walther, especially for JSB .30, weight 2.9 grams (44 grain) according to my specification, choked, but very lightly.
10. Shot count for standard — 25 shots from 220 to 140 bar.
11. Volume of the reservoir — 270 cm3 (the after regulator space is bigger then at .22 and .25).
12. Length of the barrel for standard — 477 mm.
On October of 10th I went for hunting in the morning. EDgun Matador R3, standard, caliber .30, 44 grain JSB pellet, speed of the pellet 270 m/sec, one shot, distance about 50 meters. This bird:

No chances to survive for the bird such a size (about 6 kg.) A lot of blood on the ground. I am impressed…
At the same day I had 15 free minutes, bad mood and was in need to relax. Went for the nearest wood, took EDgun Matador R3, standard, .30 caliber. It was zeroed at 50 meters, the one I use this morning for hunting. I used Ballistic Calculator “Strelok”, made by Russian guy. I put a beer can at 75 meters and even didn’t tried to use paper to “zero” POI at this distance, just took out my IPhone, opened Strelok, changed to EDgun Matador .30, found that at 77 meters it will be second mildot from the cross and made 10 shots. Here is the result:
Then I made a picture of the can, put it vertical, moved back at 100 meters and shot another 5 shots. Here is the result:
There was a light wind from the right to left, about 2-3 m/sec, I didn’t made any calculations to the wind. Strelok told me that 100 meters will be half a mil down from the fourth mil dot at my scope. I put a fourth mildot to the top of the can and got all 5 shots down to the can.
I didn’t use any rests, tables or anything like that. I was sitting in my car, shot from the driver’s window. To my opinion not bad for such a position. The ballistic of the 44 grain JSB .30 pellets is equal to their other pellets so I don’t need to get used to new corrections by the mildot reticle.
I think I would change my Matador for hunting from .25 to .30 🙂
On October of 11th, just at 7:30 I got out home, took a car and went to woods. In 8:15 or something like that I saw a black grouse on the right side of the road. He saw me also, I stopped the car and watched him, taking R3 .30 ready to shoot, but as it was on the other side of the car I couldn’t shoot. The bird slowly moved to the bushes and directed to the thicket. I opened the door of the car, got out and moved back along the road taking the car between me and the bird. When I was about 50 meters out of the car, I took the right side of the road and moved to the place where I expected to find the bird, slowly. I reached the car, which was on the left on me and in few steps saw the silhouette in bushes, took the gun ready, but couldn’t see it in the scope through the branches. I was waiting about a minute or so, then the bird moved, I saw it in the scope through a lot of branched on bushes and shot. It moved quickly then fluttered for few second and that’s it. I loaded another pellet to the gun and moved closer to it. I found him dead.
I like this caliber as I doubt I could reach him with .22 through bushes. The pellet got in the very back side of him, penetrated through all his body and stuck somewhere near the neck. I was home at 9:30 after gutting it in the garage.
Today, on October 13th I decided to calculate how many shots will I have in standard Matador R3 in .30.
Here is the result.
Not bad, I think, 25 shots with average speed of 2.9 gram (44 grain) pellet at 270 m/sec (886 f/sec), from 220 bar to 140 bar. The average air consumption is 7.3 cm3 per one Jole of energy.

I believe all you need to do with this great & unbelievable 30cal PCP, is just increase some shot count otherwise your 30 cal is over all the other 30cals per OG, SECoda & BobbyB s’ post, the first feature of this new Matador that makes me surprised is the loudness level that you said it is even quitter than R3M .22, whoever you said i didn’t test the accuracy, but i am sure that you cannot go wrong & you will not provide bad guns to your customers :8: , the accuracy will be just like your Matadors .177 , .22 & .25 cals, or even i believe more accurate due to the weight of the pellet & its stability against the wind.
and let see, i can’t wait to see the post from those guys on this gun ( Edgun Matador .30cal VS Cricket.30cal, Wolverine.30cal and FX Boss .30cal. )

OG, that’s good info. I can only hope I’m some where within that first USA release. I know on the R3 Ed said to get 1500 rounds through it before you do any adjusting to it because the velocity may increase as it settles in. I wonder if he’s going to suggest the same of the 30 cal. Do you think Ed is going to dial it down below its potential.

OG, after you posted that you had already emailed Tony to get on the list for the .30 cal 😯 I didn’t know that he was taking orders 😐 felt like I had fallen asleep at the wheel so I did what any self respecting AG head would do and that was to drop Tony an email and say hey Tony me too. I think that I’m in a nice position on the list. 🙄 Definitely after you but in the hunt for one of the anticipated .30 arrivals. OG, I think you will receive yours before I receive mine. So in the mean time have your lovely harem of sheep stand down there will be no landscaping here. 😀

BobbyB: Yep; having owned 5 Matadors already, when Ed posted that he was working up a 30 cal prototype; I immediately emailed Ed and Tony and begged to get on the list for one. I MEAN IMMEADIEATLY! After I sent the emails, I was the first one to answer Ed’s topic about the R3 30 cal and I told him that I wanted one. IIRC that was last fall and it is coming up on being a year ago since I got my order in.
I have probably averaged around a 9 month wait for Matadors and the first R2.5 25 cal long that made it to the US took around 13 months to get to me.
Ed has posted that his Matador 30 cal was going to be a game changer and the other 30 cal makers were going to have to sit up and take notice.
Looks like he was right on that!
I have now read that you and a couple of other guys here also have them on order and are waiting for the R3 30 cal longs to come in.
Ed has said that he is only going to make 20 standard and 20 longs just to see if there is a market for them.
If you guys get one and I don’t: please don’t answer the door if somebody is angrily pounding the hell out of it late at night! 😯

OG, I just plug in Ed’s numbers into conversion App that I have on my IPad. You beat me to it 😀 I guessed that the JSB 30 cal would be around 46 grains. Then I plugged in Ed’s numbers and they knocked me over. WOW !! I have a Wolverine 303 that give me about 14-15 usable shots and it was incredibly loud until Neil removed a lot of its bark. Ed state that his 30 cal sound like the .22 cal R3. Thats really amazing. Ed’s ability to design and build a custom Bull pup leave others in his dust. I have been on the 30 cal list waiting patiently and look like patience is going to payoff very soon.

Doing a Google gram to grain conversion of Ed’s 2.95 grain pellet I came up with a 45.5 grain JSB pellet. I then did a Google conversion on MPS to FPS and got:
280 mps=918.6 fps
290 mps=951.4 fps
300 mps=984 fps.
Plugging the numbers into Chairgun with a 45.5 grain pellet I get:
918.6 fps=85 fpe
951.5 fps=91.5 fpe
984=97.9 fpe
My FX Boss, with a 500 cc bottle, gets around 35-38 regulated shots at 871 fps=76.7 fpe.
The Daystate Wolverine gets around 15 useable shots, at around 990 fps=99 fpe and has a bell curve of around 30 fps or more, IIRC. It is also very long, heavy and loud.
Just from playing around with my Matadors in the last 4 ½ years, I think that Ed is being somewhat conservative with his expected output and shot count. At least as to what he expects from the long version. When Ed is finally happy with the R3 30 cal long, I think that it will give a regulated shot count in the middle to high 30s. I could be totally wrong on this but, I don’t think so; we will just have to wait and see.
30 regulated shots at 951=91.5 fpe or 984=97.9 fpe would be kick ass! 35-37 regulated shots, at the same speeds would be even better!

Looking real good. I didn’t realize there would be a standard length Matador in 30 cal. Will it have the same moderator as the long or be louder?
20 shots near 80 FPE will be grand for a nice bullpup length.

Yes, I think so. These samples are just to find out the best solution for the valve/regulator system, barrels etc. Just came back from the workshop, could achieve 265 m/sec (870 f/sec) with 3.01 gram JSB pellets (46/45 grain), that makes 105 Joles (77.43 ft/lbf). The regulator was set up to 150 bar. I got 15 consist shots from 200 to 150 bar, the reservoir volume is 270 cm3, the accuracy was about 20 mm at 50 meters (I have to get used to shoot this caliber), after the regulator opens the POI opened up widely. The sound is very comfortable, very mild. The kickback is mild and very soft also, it seems to me that .25 kicks back harder. Tomorrow will set up the regulator to 160 bar and I hope will reach 280 m/sec (920 f/sec), that will make 117 Joles (86 ft/lbf). I expect that 20 shot would be possible from 220-230 bar down to 160 bar.
