Excellent article on canting effects on trajectory…
…I wanted to find this article to better explain to a friend who insisted that there is no change in trajectory no matter what angle your LOS deviates from vertical hold. The argument started after watching an episode of “Top Sniper” (or one of those shows…) in which a Marine was training in Hatchock village and he was observing through a low lying hole between the wall and the floor by laying down and looking through his optic as his rifle lay on its side parallel to the floor. I explained to him that if he took a shot from that position he best hope that his “point blank” range is the side of a barn…I tried to tell him that he was simply “observing” and not attempting a shot…but he insisted. Anyway, I just thought I’d share this article with anyone interested….

I level my rifle in my garage on a mount. what I do for finding level is while the rings are a little stiff , I line my vertical crosshair up with the corner my neighbors house and use that as a plumbbob. then tighten the rings .
80 grit , have your friend shoot your condor while the bubble is not level and then shoot it when it is level . Let him see for himself if it makes a difference.

I hate mounting scopes. It usually takes me hours to do it and I’m still not sure how level the reticle is. I just have to get it to where I think its level and call it good. What REALLY burns me is when I finally get it right, and later some dumbass looks through my scope and tells me its not level. I once purchased a device for leveling the scope while mounting but it was worthless.

my 338 is set up with two bubble levelsand bore sighted on a plumb bob before i even fire a shot! minute of “yo ass!” out 1500 yds!!! 😈 😉

Ironically the guy I was arguing this with is a retired Marine but he was an O6 and I don’t recall any info on canting being taught at Paris Island. Maybe taught at SOI or 03 MOS…? Anyway, I told him he is “off his meds” 😆
Another thing that I like to do is hang a plumb bob at 40-50 yards, make sure that the rifle is level and check that the vertical cross hair is parallel with the plumb bob string.
Without the string, a few degrees of scope rotation are hard to notice.

That is a very good idea! That would benefit long range shooters when practicing. They could hang the plumb bob at any distance. Also a good way to verify that the level on your rifle is “true”.

I have a cheap Wally World bubble level on the scope rail all of my guns. It helps a lot.

Yeah, I have a bubble level on each action as well. I would like to try this device, but as you said it has been out of stock. Maybe one will pop up on ebay. I have a Konus pro with a built in level, but I’m not to sure I believe in it being 100% level…
A few months ago I thought my hawke scope needed repair because I had been shooting my rig for months at the same distance trying to tune my hold and shooting skills. Prior to my condor I had only shot with open sights for years. I purchased my entire rig from Tony, so I called him and explained to him that my grouping was very good at a set distance, but when I varried that distance my poi was all over the place and sent me down the path of frustration. He told me to read up on cant before I sent in the scope and this article was great help to me. This anti-can’t device has been listed as out of stock for months and maybe longer. I wish I could get one. 🙁
Anyway I have since installed 2 levels on my condor and my accuracy has improved 1000% almost instantly. :thumb:
I know I don’t need 2 levels, but they are at different sight lines and it helps me keep me focused on the importance of cant.
