filling your tank past 3000 psi
i wanted to know what happens if you fill your tank past this 3000 psi? from what read some people fill it up to 3200 psi?

A tank failing catastrophe will be rare. But a tank failing hydro is not so rare. Since most of us do not have our tanks hyrdo on the AF guns it that is not a problem.
Sure it can be done and it probably will never happen. But if it is ever sent in for Hydro they will measure the OD of the tank and if it has been over filled often it could fail to pass.
So fill er up.
Yeah, alot of compressors i’ve worked on had a tank with a swp of say 200 psi, but i knew for a fact (speaking to the guys that made them) that they were good for 500 +
But what are accepted limits? We all know that if the tank is stamped at say 3000psi, for example, then the burst rating is probably 50% more than that and the actual psi at which the tank will fail is probably double that. I’m not advising anyone to go crazy on their fill pressures, but the safety margins are huge.
Since most of us fill our own tanks the rarely ever get hydroed or a visual inspection.
That is when they would determine if the tank has need of replacement. Over filling will expand the tank past accepted limits. If during hydro this is found they will not pass your tank.

Hmmm…..Just thought there would be more stringent safety measures with regards to hpa vessels as it common knowledge how dangerous it could be.

Legal life with Aluminum and steel is until they no longer pass inspection or Hydro – Some stores wont fill an Aluminum tank after 15 years but there is no legal requirement.
Carbon fiber and Fiber wrapped aluminum are 15 years as mandated by law.
I’m surprised the valve even opens properly at 3000 psi, much less 3200! Maybe there’s something wrong with my valve, my first few shots are weak at 2800, so I fill it to 2700 for about 40 good shots before POI change. Maybe a heavier hammer is in order.
Leagal tank life is 15 years for high pressure air tanks. They need to be hydro tested every 3 to 5 years depending on the date of the tanks manufacture.
Over filling a tank makes the tank expand more than it is rated for and even tho the tanks rateing is less than pressure it will hold, overfilling will work harden the metal faster than normal use.
It may cause premature failure.
Work hardening of the tank is also increased by allowing the tank pressure to drop below 1000 lbs before refilling. As this allows the tank to
shrink to just about it’s unfilled size and then has to expand to it’s filled size.

Well I could certainly be mistaken but i thought when they hydro a tank they pressurize it to 150% of it’s rated pressure cap. ? I know when it gets to five years i will have my tank hydroed.
