First shots

I shot the condor for the first time Sunday, putting about 25 h&n barracudas through the gun. About 35 shots have been fired since I got it.
It is a .25, with the wheel set to about 10. I was filling to 3,000 and refilling when it got to 2500 or so.
I did not shoot enough to get a scope setting I was satisfied with. However, at 25 yards I was getting groups about 1 inch. From what I’ve read that is more like a 50 yard group, or even 75 yards?

Is this right? I did not get the same “feeling” about accuracy I get from shooting the .25 Maurader. I expected a bit better. But I am new to the gun and understand there are many variables given different pellets, distances, wheel settings and velocities. (I am beginning to dislike PCPs very early in my career with them given the extreme hassles involved with carrying a tank and the variations compare to a springer.)
If this is not good accuracy, how do I know if the problem is me, the gun, the settings, or the $90 UTG scope moving the aim point?

I shot my new condor SS last week at 50yrds and the JSB Kings were the best. Barracudas were a little over an inch at 50. The hunter extremes and benjamin domes were better than the barracudas.

Which model of panorama do you have? I found several options. Hawke says nothing about parallax other than intruction manual. It says if your scope has parallax you should adjust it. But the website doesn’t say whether the scope has it. A bit frustrating.
I’m wondering if 12x is enough more than 9x?

If you are thinking of a new scope with a thin reticle and a good range of hunting magnification you might look to the hawke panorama. I have a 4-12x40AO and its light too.

Emwonk, you should make the gun fit your bill. I just said the scope may be underpowered, because I have one on my 2400, and I can only use it out to 35 yards itch out my eyes getting fuzzy. I have pretty mediocre eyes for being 16, so I like to have a finer reticle for my long range shooting. My gun is setup with some Simmons scope that’s like 6-24×50 with a 1″ tube. I manage the weight by using a bipod, so no troubles there. Do some research on bass pro or cabelas or even ebay, and look for a high magnification scope for cheap. If you don’t like it, you can always return it, or trade it for someother hunting gear.

So which scope to get? I think the bug buster is great for the price. And higher magnification = heavier. But I don’t want to go into this half cocked. And I don’t want a 3 pound $1,800 scope. Something more toward the $100 budget vs. the $1,800.
I was hoping to avoid having another heavy pellet gun; picking up a 10/22 Ruger feels like a feather after one of these things. Time to man up. I can shoot the R 9 if I want something light.

Is the UTG bug buster reliable enough in terms of holding zero to eliminate that as a factor? If the aimer moves all is lost.
I am OK with 1-inch groups at 50 yards. But one hole would be nice. Groundhog eyeball sized.

emwonk, try JSB kings at the lowest power setting, or even your baracudas at the lowest setting. i can send you a package of the JSBs if you want to try them. i think the bug-buster should do fine at 20, but you may want a higher magnification/larger optic for anything past that. i believe lurker was talking about holding the gun like it was a high power powder burning rifle. like a .308 or .30-06. hope this helps. if you want other pellets just ask, i’m sure everybody here has their fair share of unused/unwanted pellets to try.

You’re doing OK for so few shots. Remember we’re dealing with a complex potentially powerful device built on an aluminum frame. Practice a consistent light hold. Pulling it back into your shoulder like a more solid rifle or shotgun will cause inaccuracy. Then there are all the other potential problems that are rare but do happen. One in a million loose screw gets a lot of discussion here on this forum. Stick to your guns, the results will be well worth the effort.

Don’t get frustrated! These guns have a “sweet spot” , usually around 2600-2800 psi is a good starting pressure. It’s posible that you have not yet found your guns spot yet. Try filling to about 2700 and shoot it down to about 1800-2000 psi.
You should give it a thorough cleaning to remove any factory crap that may be present. You should be getting a ragged hole at 50 yards with that gun. You may need to get used to the feel of the gun also. Unlike a traditional gun with a full stock, the Air Force guns take a little getting used to.
There are lots of members here that can give you advice. Use us for our knowledge of these fun but “tricky” guns.

try differant pellets and power settings, clean the barrel too. that range should be one hole groups, itll come with lots of trigger time.

im looking at Hawke airmax line, hearing great stuff about this scope thats designed for air rifles.. maybe alittle outta of what you want to spend thou idk..
