I wanted to let you know that the .22 project is not dead or a pie in the sky. I chatted with Gary this evening and he is willing to work the project. We discussed a couple options and technical factors related to the market and what guns could do what…
I believe we are headed to 2 slugs that should fill most of the demand. The first slug will be one that fits (barely) into most magazine fed guns. I specified a .380 length for that one (sound familiar to anyone here?). The other slug will be close to a scale version of the 9 ring (just under scale). This will be the .22 heavyweight. We figured that you guys have plenty of other options so there is no sense in making a slug half a grain heavier than a slug you can get for half the price (or less).
I can’t give you a timeline yet as the materials have not even been delivered for machining but I can confirm that the project is alive. (That’s more than I could say last week!)
I need to add that we’re kind of taking a hit or miss appraoch here. We think that a scale version of thew .25 slug will work but we can’t be positive untill testing is done. I expect to ask GTBJ and a couple others here on this forum (and only those here on this forum) to test the slugs. If they work, great. If not, we’ll trash the mold and re-try in the future.
I certainly hope it works on the first try as I’m paying for the mold but one never knows. I do know that I’ll get a no shit appraisal here!
Success or failure, it will be a TAG only introduction. The group here has bought oh I don’t know, maybe 99.9% of the .25 production? This is where the .22 lives or dies and if it dies…well, we’ll try again down the road…

I’m sure Gary is a great guy, and I thank him for being the progenitor of the .25 slugs, but alas, I never talked with him. You, on the other hand, I have talked with (via keypad) on numerous occasions. You have always taken “extra” time and effort to help me out when it came to these .25 slugs, and you have always gone above and beyond what is expected of any individual representing a product, and because of your grand representation, I have come to call these “Jerry’s Slugs” as well. I hope everything falls into place on the .22’s. I guess, in a sense, that makes me one of Jerry’s Kids 😯

Well it looks like the .22 slug has generated some interest beyond the crew that has been asking for what seems like years now! (Probably is years but please don’t remind me 🙂 )

I think I cought a very productive moment and got lucky. Gary is cranking out a lot of work lately and his imagination is carrying along some great ideas. One of those is working it’s way into my Yukon and maybe the .22 is just riding along! In any case, I’ll be paying for the mold which covers the shop time but probably not the design decisions…

I don’t have pricing available yet but I (you) should expect prices similar to the .25 slugs. The little slugs are generally a pain to make (which slows production and volume) and I can’t expect these to be different. Also, the mold and die sets are at least as expensive for tiny slugs as for big ones. The cherry has to be designed and cut and then the mold has to be cut. Hopefully we can get more cavities on one side of a .22 mold which cuts the casting time some but cleaning and sizing will be a pain no matter what.
For the .25 slugs, I priced them all the same and just ignored the cost of the lead. That was good as long as I had a low cost, high quality source. Last night I had to drain a full pot into a freaking muffin pan as the lead was contaminated. Pissed me off! My formerly reliable source has now sent me 2 loads of shit and I’ve had to go to a source 3 times as expensive to get proper materials until I find another source. No plans to increase prices just yet but I do have to figure this out…
As for names: The .25 slugs and the .22 (when/if they work out) are Barnes designs. They keep reverting back to “Jerry’s slugs” but they are really Barnes slugs by Surefire Casting (the kid’s company name). My name keeps getting attached as I hawk the things here and keep the information flowing but the slugs would not be available or shoot like they do if Gary Barnes had not agreed to design, test, adjust, test, and cut molds for us. He’ll get paid for this mold (the .25 program was an investment in keeping Surefire active and didn’t net Gary any payment, even for the mold) but that’s it. As the whole project benefits my kids and I’m just a grateful middleman, I’d like to keep Gary’s name attached to any name that develops i.e. “Barnes Rebars” etc…
I don’t know Jerry don’t let this take you away from cranking out those .25’s. 😆 Sorry guys, gotta a Walt barrel coming 😆 Seriously I would still be interested in some heavy .22’s though. Some 40 grain 4 rings or something!
