Q:

Frame extension…what is it?

What exactly is a frame extension? Are they custom made items? I’ve read where a Talon SS owner added a frame extension? I’m assuming he had a barrel longer than 12 inches.

Found this picture of a Talon SS and a Talon 18″ with a 12″ barrell, no shroud just an end cap installed on this page.

Is it considered bad form to link a forum in another forum? Guess I’ll soon find out.

Benzin, check PM.

Holly crap! 🙂
Mike, i dont care if its painted, anodized, blued, rusty, or painted in pink with purpule dots, if it quiets this thing down, IM INTERESTED!
plus, it actually looks pretty cool on black (specially with the black end cap)

unfortunatelly, i dont have much to trade you for it 🙁 (not airgun related at least)
some guys seemed to be interested in OLD condor valves, i got 2 spares, one in “out of the box” condition, and one with a missing spring and seal. if youre interested in them, i would gladly trade you both valves for it.
i must warn you tho, the working valve ONLY WORKED OK UNDER 2000psi! (thats why i got one of the new ones)

Interested??? (pleeeeeeeeeease) 🙂
if not, maybe you can sell it to me? i would really really appreciated it!

So the 12″ in the short talon frame, does that stick out the end? Either way, you would lose any silencing properties that the a SS has, right? Buying a SS and a 18″ barrel seems better than buying a Talon and a 12″ barrel.

12″ barrel will be 1″ inside std. Talon frame. Not enaugh for heavy silencing but you would get the shortest and most compact version.

I choosed Talon over SS because I wanted 18″ barrel. It provides slightly more power (25-30fpe compared to 30-35fpe) but what was more important for me is that it also uses air more effectively (more shots and less sound if you don’t count frame). For SS and 18″ barrel you would still need external silencer or extender. So it’s a compromise (or preference) either way.

mcMike, that is freakin sweet. have you compared that to off the shelf (or net) products?

Thx. I don’t know if there are any off the shelf products as a frame-extender but for a commercial silencer I believe DIY-extenders are better just because of the volume is much bigger and that is the most important thing for (airgun) silencer. You can play with different baffles and soft material as much as you want but without volume it’s all minor tweaking. There is _very_ little difference in sound between stripper-cones and that vortex-chamber in pic above.

My short experience with silencers are that volume comes first above everything. Then comes some soft material to kill the pitch from blastwave and then baffles. And then somewhere there is the bushning and frame venting. Do realise that they provide quite minor addition to volume compared to big extender itself.

AAAWWW! I NEED ONE OF THEEESEEE!!!!
i want to use my gun at full power AND I CANT!!!!!
IM FU#@%G FRUSTRATED!

😆

Actually I have one spare frame-extender. The mark one which I don’t need anymore (and which is little more effective since it’s heavier). I also have few stripper-cones and brass/chromeplated AND aluminium endcap of course. This version aligns on barrel and has venting to frame. Unfurtunately it’s the painted version (with primer though) and not anodized.

I don’t want to sell it but I would be happy to exhange it for some usefull stuff…. On my have-to-purchase-eventually I have multiple items but for example a chrono – it’s a sure deal 😉

Yesterday, 3:00 am, i saw a disgusting god damn street mutt picking in the garbage, he had allready ripped a couple of bags (its not the first time), i had my condor at arm´s reach! AND I COULDNT TAKE THE DAMN SHOT BECAUSE OF THE NOISE!!!!

(sorry guys, just blowing some steam)

cheers Adam. I have another question, I think I read somewhere that the talon ss frame is longer than the talon 18 frame. is this true, and does it mean that if I get an 18 it wont be a true SS if I was to buy a 12″ barrell in the future?

That’s correct. This small detail slipped from me when I purchased my std. Talon few weeks ago. If I would have known it I would very likely gotten SS.

I modified my frame-extender since I now believe that the extender should not touch to the barrel from anypoint so forget the “cocentric aligner”. I align and connect to the frame only. The barrel is totally free (and protected) inside extender.

In the chamber I have 5mm thick very solid blanket wrapped around the inside of extender. This will silence the exhaust noise. Then I have 2-3 strippercones. This seemed to work quite effectively and is very simple design. There is also venting to the frame and first barrel bushing is vented. Also the frame has couple of small holes in bottom to vent air from frame outside.

SlimB,

The Talon SS frame and the Condor Frame are the same length. The Talon Frame is shorter. An 18″ barrel in a SS frame will come to the end of the frame.

The description of the frame extenders from frameextender.com say it is a hollow tube with a special end cap. Does anyone know if it is possible to make (or buy) and install the co centric aligner and the baffle-strippers like the ones in the picture mcMike posted? Would I be correct in assuming the frameextender product is not vented to the frame?

I have searched around both the Airhog and Talontunes sites and cant find much details on their frame extenders. I wonder how much difference there is between the different ones?

I plan to import a .22 18″ Talon soon, and buy a 3rd party frame extender. Any advice welcome.

By the way it’s a sweet site you chaps have here. Lot of talented people modding and turning up things, very impressive.

Slim,
If you are getting the Talon then a frame extender will be needed to quiet it down. Each place has a different method of making the frame extender so contacting each is the best resource.

I have seen the framextender.com version and it is simple and efficient. And does not cost much.

I used finish washers for this because the are curved.

mhh, im not shure wich kind of washers you mean. any chance you culd post a picture of one, or maybe a link to a picture? i think ill go with the pvc pieces instead of the springs.

If you are shooting supersonic there’s nothing you can do.

For full power, i only use 28g eunjins, not even barracudas. So i dont think well have a problem there.

quote mcMike:

But at the end you have the sound of pellet hitting target.
Also the environment plays a very big role.

The target i plann on shooting at (in this urban area), is about 100 meters away, so i dont think ill have any problems with the people living next door to my house hearing the pellet impact :).
About the enviroment, well, i shoot thru the livingroom window, sitting inside the house, several feel away from the window.

Thanks for your help guys

quote Benzin:

If i were to build a very simple frame extender, like the one in the pictures by yellow ninja, would it make my condor quiet enough to be used at FULL POWER, in an urban area?

It depends. If you are shooting supersonic there’s nothing you can do. So first think to do is choose pellet heavy enaugh and make sure you are subsonic.

After that there’s lots of things you can do. With simple frame-extender and some baffles you can reduce almost all sound of pressurised air. Then you have the sound of hammer slap which is like closing the car door. You can silence that too. But at the end you have the sound of pellet hitting target. That’s the hardest one to quiet down and exactly the thing I try to figure out currently myself.

Also the environment plays a very big role. In my backyard there are brick walls in almost every direction and they reflect the sound making it sound louder than it is. If I go to field it feels many times more silent.

Benjin,

The sound would be reduced a lot, but it would still be pretty loud. I tried without any baffles and it was loud… I put baffles in and it quiet enough so I had no problems shooting the Condor in my yard, and I have neighbours that are pretty close… and that condor was an 86 fpe .25

Really easy baffling the shrouds. Just need some springs and washers. I used finish washers for this because the are curved. You just need a peice of smaller diameter tube to go inside the mail tube to keep the springs/washers at one of the shroud, or you can drop the springs and just use PVC the entire way through holding the washers.

So while it might quiet down the condor enough without baffles, its not much more effort to reduce the noise even more that theres no reason not too really.
