Highly radioactive water seeping into the ocean from Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear plant is creating an “emergency” that the operator is struggling to contain, an official from the country’s nuclear watchdog said on Monday. This contaminated groundwater has breached an underground barrier, is rising toward the surface and is exceeding legal limits of radioactive discharge, Shinji Kinjo, head of a Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) task force, told Reuters. Countermeasures planned by Tokyo Electric Power Co. are only a temporary solution, he said. Tepco’s “sense of crisis is weak, Tepco’s “sense of crisis is weak,” Kinjo said. “This is why you can’t just leave it up to Tepco alone to grapple with the ongoing disaster. Right now, we have an emergency,” he said. Tepco has been widely castigated for its failure to prepare for the massive 2011 tsunami and earthquake that devastated its Fukushima plant and lambasted for its inept response to the reactor meltdowns. It has also been accused of covering up shortcomings. It was not immediately clear how much of a threat the contaminated groundwater could pose. In the early weeks of the disaster, the Japanese government allowed Tepco to dump tens of thousands of tonnes of contaminated water into the Pacific in an emergency move. The toxic water release was however heavily criticized by neighboring countries as well as local fishermen and neighboring countries as well and the utility has since promised it would not dump irradiated water without the consent of local townships.

people are still living in hiroshima, and nagasaki, yes some cancers are are of the charts, but its liveable.

but how about all the nuclear bomb test done i nevada etc…how much crap did those bombs push up into the air/jetstreams to be carried all over the world…how much remains ?

which leads me to another question….radiation wise how much crap does a bomb deposit, vs say Chernobyl or Fukushima ?

honestly there is so much crap you can die from that is much more likely to happen, be it food poisoning or a car accident …. diabetes …what actually concerns me more is the over use of antibiotics in everything from handsoap/toothpaste (yeah colgate 24hr ) / doctors over prescription a lot of doctors still give you penicillin when you have a virus…penicillin does nothing to a virus….anyhow soon we will face everyday bacteria which is resistant,that will the hit the very young and the elderly the worst (just like radiation i suppose)

also is it true that pure water can not be radioactive ? that in fact its the particles(minerals/dirt etc) in the water that becomes radioactive….and could that be filtered out ?

last question of the night…..if you see an atomic blast, does that mean you are hit with radiation at the same time, or does that radiation travel slower than light ?

Who cares if radiation has made it to the west coast of the USA. PEOPLE in Japan are affected by this.

Critter. I understand the occurrence of radon related radioactives having lived in Texas most of my life. The steel pipe corner posts on my place will set a Geiger counter chuckling like a madman due to years of channeling radon bearing fluids to the surface prior to my buying it as scrap. My concerns are for fuel particles and first order fusion products. The whole “dental X-ray” argument is guaranteed to piss me right the fuck off. Yes, the particles at issue will indeed measure some multiple of normal environmental exposure or the dread medical diagnostic exposure. Yet the particle which concerns me is the particle which lies in my lung or colon, producing said exposure continuously for the rest of my life, however long (short) that turns out to be.

Media, and numerous “experts” tell me that radioactive particles are this or that times as powerful as whatever environmental exposure sounds least threatening to their focus groups. The fact is they are conflating cause and effect in a way that as you so aptly put it, aren’t lies, but might as well be.

The contaminants that concern me are so rare (at the moment) that they are almost undetectable except in automotive or furnace air filters, yet so deadly as to pose a critical health risk to someone inhaling / ingesting even a single particle. We take our skin for granted. It does an amazing job of protecting us from radiation, but against airborne radioactives it’s effectively useless.

As for ENE news- The report that I was incorporated in was an aggregation of several other interviews/stories selectively edited to attempt to show our group in a bad light. It wasn’t outright lying, but it was damn close.

John, I’ll give that a shot when I get home (I’m heading back from college at the moment) and see if I can post a video. Most of the activity found in road dust is radon progeny, and that was one of the things I’ve been checking for untoward changes. A fun experiment to do is drive around for a few hours, then as fast as you can (under a minute) pull the filter out. You’ll get usually 3-4x background that decays with a roughly ~5min half-life. This is due primarily to Po-218, the direct daughter product of Rn-222, which is in turn from the decay chain of naturally present Uranium. The reason it “sticks” in air filters is that your car builds up a charge from static electricity (the tires insulate it from ground) and the Rn decay process usually ends up ionizing (charging) the atom. Unlike charges attract and they stick! Now, if you let that same filter sit out for an hour or so, you’ll find it’s all the way back down to background (within statistical uncertainty).
The reason you know it’s not due to Fukushima is that the half-life of the material (which you can measure by simply watching the reading on the counter and noting the time) is too damned short for it to make it here. Even in the upper atmosphere, the travel time for any dust from Japan to the west coast is on the order of a day or so. For a material with a 5min observed half-life, it will undergo 5/(24*60)=~288 half lives during its one-day trip. This equates to a reduction (from its initial value of one) all the way down to 1/2^288=~2×10^-87. This is .000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000002 (86 zeros) times the initial quantity. That means that if you found a 100 decay per second chunk of radioactive gunk that had a 5-min half life in your air filter (which is entirely reasonable to see), and it came from Fukushima (which is not reasonable), it would have to have originally consisted of 5×10^88 particles, which is 38 orders of magnitude higher than the number of atoms in the planet itself(~1×10^50).
What would indicate contamination from Fukushima would be long-lived radioactivity in dust. If you were seeing a slow drop (half life of a day or longer), then I could respect the idea that it was Fukushima related, as it would have had time to reach the west coast. However, that’s not foolproof. Some areas (Utah, Kentucky and some parts of Montana and Wyoming) have naturally occurring U/Ra levels in soil that will mimic the long-lived radioactivity from a reactor incident. For such instances, you pretty much have to grab a spectrometer and measure the decay energy, which can be directly matched to the contaminant. If it’s Sr-90, Cs-134/7 or any radioiodine, then it’s Fukushima. However, I have yet to see a report showing more than trace levels outside Japan. These are not government processed reports, but ones put together by lab monkies like myself on samples that they themselves have often gathered. I won’t deny that TEPCO and Japan have not been truthful/accurate in their reporting of Fukushima, but I doubt that’s causing radioactive air filters here.

ENE News is a news gathering site that provide access to global media stories concerning the energy industry. It’s hard to imagine that their credibility is suspect, since they produce none of their content. Granted, they don’t validate stories, but determining the veracity of any news story is ultimately the duty of the reader. Personally, I’ll accept the conclusion of US investigators who called this a critical global emergency in the immediate aftermath of the quake.

Do me a favor. Pull the air filter out of your car and give it a quick scan. I’m curious how many bananas worth of radiation has built up.

I feel very safe from neutron attacks now since I am supplementing my diet with 9 mg of Boron. I’ll be cutting back to 3-6 mg shortly as I am using it to reduce joint pain. A year ago I was doing the same and I got feeling so good without pain that I went off all supplements. That was a terrible bad move. In 7-8 weeks the joint pain returned with vengeance. I started taking only the 3 mg maintenance dose but it was not enough. Eventually I gradually increased to the 9 mg dose and after a couple months it appears to be working again. Boron supplement has been taken off the market in a few countries such as Australia where people with positive experiences taking it now have to get theirs from borax as you so wisely commented on as common abundant source. It was available here locally over a year ago but has not been for a while. So, I mail ordered a three year supply for myself. It is very cheap (inexpensive) ❗ ❗
Strangely, I no longer need the one prescription drug they told me I will need the rest of my life. No, not thorazine, thyroid. I don’t know if the boron fixed it or several years of defying my doctor who wanted me on synthroid. I insisted on pig thyroid instead…OINK OINK 💡

Thanks Critter, I would much rather your findings to be the facts of the matter. My sister lives in Seattle and I would hate to think she is being radiated. As for the toys…thanks but that won’t be necessary as even if they were contaminated the damage to me would have already been done. And I’m not parting with Ultra man and certainly not Godzilla!!!! 😀

I personally don’t know the pharmacological uses of boron, but in the nuclear industry it’s used as a neutron absorber. Boron-10 in particular (~20% of natural boron) has a thermal neutron cross section in the thousands of barns. To put that into more everyday terms, if you were a tiny atom-sniper shooting neutrons at nuclei, and an iron nucleus was scaled to the size of an apple, a boron nucleus would be the size of a house. While the boron nucleus is really a lot smaller than the iron one, it behaves as if it were much larger and absorbs neutrons, rapidly undergoing an exothermic reaction resulting in He-4 and Li-7. This is useful in shielding from neutron radiation only. None of the isotopes emitted en masse from Fukushima are neutron emitters, however, if you were in a situation where you had neutrons coming at you, boron (and water!) would be a great barrier. As for it being banned, that’s bullshit. The most common form of boron used in reactors and labs is borax, the same stuff in borax soap. That’s still on the shelves last time I checked. Roach powder works too (dehydrated boric acid). We actually use the latter mixed with casting wax to make quick neutron shields for various experiments.
Also, on the topic of the dose from Fukushima on the west coast, the levels I observed were so low to be of no significance. Even in those with DNA repair issues (primarily the aged) would not notice. We’re talking thousandths of a dental x-ray worth of dose. Absolutely vanishing in the scheme of things. That’s likely not the case in Japan, but here it isn’t bad.

OK Critter, how about the idea that Boron could be used to keep radiation from getting into cows milk :?:Is that in anyway plausible ❓

You know how inaccurate the internet can be. I’ve read that dairy producers in Hawaii and on the left coast were using it. And another rumor, that they have banned Boron as a supplement in several countries. Have you ever read a Nexus magazine from Australia ❓

Yep, I have a set of .1uCi standardized sources in addition to a stack of radioactive rocks that I’ve personally gathered. Also, my equipment (the stuff at the lab at least) has to work or I’d probably get fired. Wish I could post a video demonstrating the geiger counter works on some rocks I have, but I’m having some camera issues at the moment.

We know that there isn’t a massive increase of death in the general population . You should know that the average persons immune system reacts quite well in defense of low doses of radiation. The increase in unexpected deaths is among the infants with underdeveloped immune systems and the elderly with compromised immune systems. Your age group has little to worry about other than an eventual thyroiid problem.

What the hell, the world is overpopulated so who cares about a few infants or especially who cares about the retired elderly anyway ❓

Also, 80G, I will personally measure the activity of those toys if you would like. I have the equipment literally sitting next to me at the moment.
