FX Royale 400, Leupold VXIII LR Holland & 140 yards

This morning I decided to get a 140 yard zero for my Royale and the Leupold VIII Long Range 4.5×14 30 MM SF with the Hollands reticle.

I have 50 thru 100 yard settings, which involves sighting in at 50 yards and then just shooting a group to see which MOA number the group falls on. This is with the rifle set to shoot 18.1 grain Exacts at 920FPS or 34 FPE.

18.1 grain Exacts, as if there is any other pellet in the world.

So I set three pieces of bond paper taped end to end on a piece of plywood and nailed it to a 8 foot post at the end of my range at the vineyard, then I lasered off 140 yards and went to work.

I knew that with the 21 MOA reticle, and 50 yard zero, I would run out of reticle at around 135 yards, so I raised the POI to the 100 yard zero which is 12 MOA from the 50 yard zero, then I shot a 5 shot group.

As usual I was shooting off a car hood, this time the Explorer with a Caldwell bag and rolled up jacket under the butt. The wind flags were wet with dew and hanging straight down.

The bullets dropped 23.5 inches from the 100 yard POI and landed on the 16.5 MOA mark.

The shots were just at 2 inches c to c.

I dig the stock. Looks nice an light. Will it be taking on the job of grape vine protector this year?

I am really liking it, itis not perfect but it is still a fine rifle.

THe only thing I can find fault with is th emarazine, it has a quirky loading sequence and in factory form suffers from what most air gun magazines do, in that it will deform pellets.

I read up on how to debur the loading canal and wnet after it with my flex shaft dremel. It vastly imporved it.

The AA S410 I had was a great rilfe, but it does not compare to the Royale in anything except accuracy. The FX is far smoother, lighter, gets more shots and has a better balance,

It is a easy gun to shoot well.

Lately I have been experimenting with putting a level on the rifle and on the scope to improve my long range precision. It was an eye opener on how much just cloamping the rings down will rotate that scope in the rings.

I had never had a level on a scoped rifle, but have had them on a few BPCR front windgauge sights. Now there is a place where you can spend money, for a set of front and rear sights it is easy to surpass $700.00. And just as in cheap scopes, cheap long range sights are not worth the shipping costs.

Got any idea of the cost? I know you do first rate work, and these images will send a message to the coroner, and all the nosy sum ‘bitches of the world in general, for when I die…I’m thinking it might make the papers!

May not be practical for varmints but pretty cool non the less nice shooting!

I doubt the practibility of 140 yard shooting but it sureis fun. Just too much wind to deal with. I have mad a few shots at that range and beyond with the Condor, but there was considerably more banging than there was thwacking.

120 yards is closer to a practical limit perhaps even 125 yards.

Now if I put that scope on the Ranger45 it is a different situation.

That’s some amazing shooting RC. So, it looks like you’re at least crow-starling accurate at 140, sparrow-mouse accurate at 120 and mouse-grasshopper accurate at less than 120 yds!

Either you’re a damn good shot or you’ve got a magic Explorer; a well protected magic Explorer.

You might want to start digging holes now. Come grape season, you’ll be fillin’ them up with grape pests! (Don’t want too many flies breeding. Plus, the stench will affect your accuracy!)

Glad you’re showing the Royale to bring out the best in a good shooter. Gotta love it! 140 yds, that’s nuts!!! 😆

I got my 120 yard zero today, important because right in the middle of the vineyard is a huge Doug FIr, I got one group that was .92 at that range.

To put Roach’s 140 yard accuracy into perspective…the average distance center to center, between our eyes is 3.25″, and from the tip of our nose up to our eyebrow ridge is about 3″.

Do the math, that’s roughly a square 3″ per side. Roach can put five pellets inside that box, with about 1/2″ to spare on the sides.

Conclusion: Don’t piss off Roach at less than 175 yards!
