FX smooth bore barrel
Been a lot of talk about this barrel, If its so good why has not the other makers jumped on the smooth bore barrel ?
Or should I say smooth bore twist barrel? Is it that good.
I will admit I am a big CZ fan even if my 25 cricket has a LW barrel , My Mutant and 22 Cricket have CZ barrels ,
I am so tempted to buy a FX wildcat 25 just to see what all the fuss is about ,
That will pretty well kill my 25Mutant if it ever comes out ,
I am just wondering , Is this barrel B/S, The wave of the future, Or just an average fucking barrel.
The guys over on AGN think the barrel is made by god, Nothing bad about it 50, 100 and further shots made by the kind and best barrel made for air guns,
Am I being led down the path of sin?
Or you guys going to show me the light ?

Well the gun sold so it over with for me , I could have bought the Wildcat and not liked it and sold it for a profit or broke even, NOT AN EASY THING FOR ME , Second hand guns kind of scare me anyway, I have some guns that shoot perfect , Its king of crazy to sell them at a loss.
If they were wacko and shot weird groups then I would sell them, And that’s the reason I hate buying second hand guns ,
when you have the perfect gun , They are hard to sell, For me anyway. Its why I have three PCPs and not two as my rules say.
And looking for a 25 mutant , Fourth PCP gun, I suck enforcing my rules,

Here is my two cents, all that full barrel twist migrated over from powder burners, and is not really needed for pellets, so that is a plus for the ST because the faster rotation does have an negative impact on the pellet at further distances, second this is the first change to barrels since rifling was invented? Is it better? NO, is it worse? NO. I’ve put 1000-1500 rounds in my Impact in the last 4 days and haven’t cleaned it and its still has not issues with accuracy at 75 yards. Is it better or worse than my Cricket, Tactic, or s510? Yes because I’m shooting it more than the others right now. But when the Tactic was new that was the latest and greatest gun in my shop. It does seem to like slower speeds, but so my Tactic shoot MK1’s at 790 and my Impact is pushing them at 825-850 on PW5, So at the end of the day, its more personal preference once you become truly familiar with your gun you can compete on any level. I’ve seen the Marauder do some great shots.
I have a .22 Wildcat coming next week,I’ll let you know how it compares to the Mutant. :biggrinn:

smooth twist barrels have been out for many many years……………long before FX
Mike hold on, my buddy just bought a FX Wildcat in .25 and so far he loves it. I personally haven’t shot it yet, it’s been to damn cold and windy her for me to shoot. I stuck it out my barn window and got it on paper for him. I’ll have him drop it off one day soon when it’s a little warmer and do a test for you. So in the mean time sit back and relax.
I have and shot all the barrels mentioned … and more.

My take on it as a avid Air gunner is that the 22 Revo I have needs indeed less clean, not no clean like some say but that’s just my gun.
If group open up I clean after maybe 12 tins, if I switch pellet batches I might need to be cleaned.
If you don’t like to clean barrels it’s a plus …..
Accuracy whys I tested it out to only 80-100 yards with no apparent difference to me.
Beyond that I’ve only read that, “it not that great for longer range shooting” but I seldom shoot beyond 100+ yards, “spin rate less then conventional rifled barrels” but for some reason it sounds/feels like it’s spinning faster when exiting the barrel ?
I was looking to pick up a Wildcat 22 cal but decided I needed/like to be able to switch over the cocking lever.
It just a hobble Mike, buy it, review it here and enjoy the ride …… besides u can resale it and think of the cost difference as just a cost for the experience.

I’ve only had two guns with the ST barrels so I cant comment much on them.
I had an FX400 in .177 that would group like a charm…. for about 30 -40 shots then would go all to hell. Brush out the first couple inches of the barrel and it would group again…for about 30-40 shots. I got tired of screwing around with it and got rid of it.
Also have an FX500 in .25 that I’ve never touched the barrel on. Groups perfectly and has for years.
Didn’t FX purchase the patent or the rights from the gent who came up with the ST concept?

To me it’s a bit of a scam because of the price. They charge an insane ammount of money for that ST barrel when it is literally a smoothbore barrel blank put in to a machine that presses the “twist” on from the outside. There is a youtube video showing the process with Axelsson doing it. But putting the price aside, it seems to shoot as well as any barrel if you’re lucky enough to get a good one, and polish it. Although it seems to me they like slower speeds that yeild lower BC so Long range shots will drop more than with “traditional” barrels. But that’s just my understanding.

I had a FX Royale .25 that was spitting fliers every now and then. What really tightened up its performance was getting Ernest to polish the barrel and up the speed to around 900-920 fps. Had no issues to 70 yds, but didn’t have a longer range to target shoot. I traded it to a friend for some power equipment and he’s a great shot. He claimed it would easily go out to 90-100 yds. He’s out of town and left me the rifle to shoot until he returns. Maybe I’ll take it for a ride where I can see distance.
I used it on pesting hunts for squirrels, where the 80 shots/refill came in handy.
