gas ram?

has anyone ever considered making a type of nitro piston that has a hollow center to accomodate the barrel in place of the hammer spring? if it were possible, i could imagine it eliminating problems like hammer bounce, consistency, and possibly replacing the need for different springs by being able to adjust the internal pressure via a charging probe or something of that nature. or was it already done and i just missed it? 😳
