Q:

Going to stop casting 25 acp round nose bullets

These are the last groups I will shoot with these bullets. I have a couple hundred on hand and that will be the last of them.

I have been having flyers that are about an inch out of the groups and high, took a while to realize that when I am sizing I have bullets that hardly have any resistance when they go thru the sizer. I think what is happening is my undersize mold is causing blowby on the undersize bullets and this is causing the flyers, which always seem to go high.

These are my last groups. Throw the flyers out and I am getting 1/2 inch at 38 yards.

So I emailed Eric at Hollowpoint Mold Service and asked about some of the services he provides. One service is making the bullet cavity wider, another is adding a driving band on the nose. And of course he does the hollowpoint conversion that Tofazou and Mr Hollowpoint use.

So I am sending him my mold on Monday along with some cast bullets from it and a slug from my barrel to get the mold made exactly the right diameter, which will also true it up becasue now it is oblong by .002, and add a driving band to the nose, and to also either make a SWC nose on it by either milling it or adding the hollowpoint conversion.

It should end up looking like this and be .2545 in diameter.

Marvin,

Yes, and that is what the entire bullet is doing now. If I check for leading, only the lands have leading and the bore is still blue.

Erics advises it is cost prohibitive to mill a SWC nose on the bullet, so I will see how it shoots before having him add the cup point with the HP set up.

Thanks zMarvin,

Charlie Another way that might be cheaper since this is a one rifle mold . Is to enlarge the shank of the bullet to just touch or slide over the lands . A light bore ride . The area before the ogive and just before the front band That is what I have now with the smaller diameter of barrel . It might just require a polish with his lath and not a cutting set up .Marvin

Jerry,

If Eric can’t mill a swc big flat orgive on the nose, I will have him install that HP system but instead of a HP it will either be a flat point or a cup point with a very small depression.

I am just not convinced that HP’s expand on game with our velocities, and if it is really worth while.

Pictures of big wide holes in crows and squirrels do not impress or convince me they do, I am sure you have a manlia folder full of pictures of big wide holes made from your flat point slugs.

I am sending him a slug from my barrel so he can adjust that mold to precisely what my barrel dimensions are with soft lead alloy, and it also forstalls any errors between my caliper and his.

Excellent design choice. Go for the flat nose and in any case, the forward drive band will help loading square in the barrel. I’ll bet the work great.

Oh yeah, I could buy a but load of pellets for what this project costs. Kings shoot splendidly in my rifle.

I just like doing stuff myself.

The mold was working all right the way it was, it was capable of killing anything I wanted to kill with it, remember it was not a squirrel load, I could use Kings for that.

I am just making it better, not giving up. I like experimenting with stuff. PCP’s and cast bullets gives me the venue to experiment, it is a wide open field of stuff to try.

RC,

hope this works out for ya…this may be it. have you shot them thru any other barrels? if so, was it tighter? dont quit, this one was a little too good to throw away, i was optimistic bout this one… 😀

Roach, Seems like a heck of a lot of work for Pellets 😕 Are you not able to find any that work for you right out of a tin?

JD,

Making the mold a SWC may involve putting a cup point hollowpoint on the mold. It will still probably end up around 50 grains.

The Lee sizer barely touches the bullets now, hitting them only on the widest part of the oblong shape, so zI do not have to open it up yet.

You should look up http://www.hollowpointmold.com and see what Eric can do to molds, and the good thing is he is only about 20 miles from where I live.

I was looking today at a Lyman 25-20 mold with a gas check on Lyman site, Eric can remove the gas check by either milling it away form the top of the mold, or milling it out to the diameter of the bullet.

RC,

How much do you figure the driving band will add to the weight? Hope you decide on the SWC with the meplat in your picture, but I guess if you hollow it.. it would counter the added band.

How did you like your Lee sizer? Did you have to open it up?

JD

Airgunner,

You have to realize my drawing is not to scale.

If you were making a new mold you could.

But when altering an existing mold unless you have some way to weld it and remill it, I doubt you could.

I doubt adding one more band will cause much friction.

Eric will only be milling out one more groove and opening up the diameter and maybe altering the nose shape.

Should give it a little more stability and making it the correct diameter. If I had an older barrel like Marvin does, it would not be a problem, but as it is it is .002 to .003 undersize.

Roachcreek

Can you narrow the lands to reduce friction ?
