Got my tank from MAC1
On Monday I got my new tank from Tim at MAC1. Tim is a great guy to work with. It’s been working great so far, a caveman could have assembled it (very straightforward). I love how quickly I can get outside and keep shooting now – that’s what it’s all about.

Exactly! Except you have to keep on paying to get it filled, unless you get the fire station to do it for free.

I haven’t had to fill it yet… I called the local paintball shop before ordering it but I forgot to see if they would fill tanks this big… 😯
Luckily I have a fire station near me. In your situation I would just say “I enjoy shooting the gun at my friend’s house who lives outside of the city” or something… be creative.
I could litarally ride my bike to the firestation from my house is about 5 minutes. I need to call and see if they fill to 4500psi. There is also a sporting goods store that fills scuba tanks a few minutes away. 🙂 How do you go about asking them to fill it? I live in the city limits and I don’t want them to think I’m gonna shoot it. (whether I am or not 🙂 )
The big tank holds 4500 psi, so it will give you a good # of fills. Probably around 20 I’d say. The tank I have is 44 cu ft but there are bigger out there. Empty weight is 6.9 lbs, so it is very light. I’d say it is even light enough to walk around with in a backpack in the field while you’re hunting (which IMO is a lot better than bringing a pump, I think it would ruin the experience).

Don’t fit the SCBA tanks Tim (or anyone else sells). Or so I understand. It should be easy to sort out, call Van or Martin and ask if their gear fits SCBA tanks?
I already had a fill adaptor I bought form Joe B for my 66 cu ft SCBA tank and had it with me when I went to Mac 1. In fact, Tim reworked it for me to a much shorter hose. I had a chance to look at them side by side. Tim uses the same ‘hand tight’ tank fitting and vent valve assembly, but he very cleverly drills and taps the body of the valve (or rather has it done, it’s SS and very tough) for the gauge. This not only makes it more compact, but has a lower ‘lost volume’ and so saves on air loss when venting.
Perhaps the cheapest way to go is to get the ‘standard’ fill adaptor, the one that goes on normal 3000 psi SCUBA tanks (skin diver, not Fire Fighter) which you can get under $50 from EBay or Paint Ball places and the SCBA to K valve adaptor like:
IIRC Tim also had these for a reasonable price. In this case the ‘normal’ SCUBA adaptor has the gauge and vent valve, they’re just cheap do to simple construction and high volume. You will also need this adaptor to fill your tank at some locations (sporting goods stores don’t support Fire Fighters….). Otherwise a male QD does the job as the air vendor can then fill it like he would a Paint Ball HPA tank.
Anyway, I don’t believe AH sells anything that mates up with the types of tanks in question. Very neat, but a different system on their 4500 psi tanks, and a skin diver’s valve system on the lower pressure stuff. You want a CGA 347 (6000 psi SCBA) not DIN (SCUBA stuff) I believe.

The one I just got from him is 44 cu ft (half the size of the Airhog tank), called ’30 minutes’ by Fire Fighters. 14 pounds full. Only good for 15 years (these are a few years old, ask when you buy), after that you can pull the valve and get a new bottle.
These are not compatable with the AH tanks (I have both). The AH unit has the gauge and bleed valve built in, SCBA tanks like these need that ‘outside’ (you see the gauge in the hex piece in the feed line, the vent valve is on the back).
You can go to the Airhog site and use their fill calculator to determine the fills you get (depends on fill pressures), but the tanks fill to 4500 psi (not always easy to find, best to check that part first). IIRC I should get ‘twenty something’ fills.

$100 for the fill adapter is cheap. I think I paid something like $125.
If you piece it together yourself it is still over $100
I’d say get the Mac 1 Tank, and the fill adapter from Airhog because they only charged me $100 for it.

I got my 44cu ft tank from Steve at Pomona, who’s a good guy to deal with. Total $325 for a brand new tank, valve, gauge, and hose with quick connect set up.
