Grizzly G0704 Mill **IT’S HERE!!!**

Well i’m finally doing it!! I am going to buy a vertical mill and I am stoked!!! 😯

I worked on an Alliant full size Bridgeport knock off a bunch of years back making custom bicycle frames. I have been a wood worker most of my life and I have found that cutting metal on a mill is a calming experience compared to the wood tools.

Good news is that I will be able to make custom stocks for the AF rifles with a single inlet groove for the action. Previously I have been using a table saw and it’s not the best way to do it but it works.

Should be delivered in about a month…

A lathe is next!! 😯 😆

I just got my mill 4 weeks ago made by Weiss and im more than happy with the standard of machining of the dovetails for example compared to the crap X2 ive got. I got the long table version which looks to have all the travel il ever need 😕 and at the moment im in the middle of CNC ing it so my mill is in bits in the spare room .


Arfter seeing the G0704 cut steel i think its going to be upto the job of the steel engraved gun i want to make 😯 which the X2 was never upto.

vibrations can sometimes be lessened by mounting the work as close to center of the table and as close to the shortest position of the spindle stroke.

with the belt driven machines, watch the pulleys…they tend to work loose and vibrate…i had that problem with my combination machine but with all pulleys tight it lessens vibrations a great deal.

Nice mill. I have the 4063, same machine but different spindle, mine does not have micrometer adjustment and no dro. I bought a cheap digital caliper and I’m going to mount it to the spindle to give me dro capability. Real cheap way to go, but it works.
tooling is a nightmare. I had to buy a second toolchest/rollaround to house just the tooling for my little mini mill. the first toolchest holds the tooling for my lathe. My mechanics tools and power tools go into boxes under my workbench. No time to work on cars anymore.

I love my mill, but I’m thinking of that bridgeport.

Believe it or not it was the industry standard! I can make room in the living room for a Bridgeport. Moving it anywhere is another story and wiring it to the house power may be difficult too…

Shit, it would probably fall through the current living room floor…

The tiniest vibration or flex can fuck up a nice part and make you go insane. The only way to compensate is to cut smaller amounts of metal per pass. Having built my own mill Ive learned the hard way. Damn I wish I had room for a Bridgeport.

WOK, I have been doing some additional reading on minimills.

Do you find your mill flexes from side to side? I can’t see it being a problem, the other mills that folks recommend don’t have the table travel I need but the say they are stiffer, that and a hundred and fifty pounds heavier… 😯

This one is right at my weight limit. I move too much for anything heavier. I don’t see myself stressing it too much. Probably aluminum, hdpe and various hardwoods…

Very cool! The only advice I have is have a pile of cash for tooling…
