the infamous GCA passed by bill clinton acomplished NOTHING.
nowdays the AR is the MOST POPULAR RIFLE IN AMERICAN FIREARMS HISTORY and yet it’s demonized by the congress and state legislatures MORE than those who commit firearms related crimes! (you know, blame the AR, NOT the crimninal.) and, too boot, FBI statistics show a DECREASE in firearms related crimes (overall)
This is what happened in the UK. Originaly the UK also had a right to bear arms. It was the very founding of democracy over here. However it was slowly eroded away one law at a time to the point its at now. Its next to impossible to legally own anything past a air rifle. With new legislation even this is slowly coming under questions. The age limit for owning one goes up and up. The places you can shoot becomes more limited and you cant even buy one mail order any more. More worrying is the law has gone past guns but even large knives are illegal and its illegally to carry even a relatively small knife.
People are regularly locked up for for defending them self. Just today a man went to jail for beating a man that attacked him and his family with a knife. He dies them up and threatened to kill them. The farther escaped and beat the crap out of one of the guys that attacked them. The attackers got away with no prosecuted and the farther was and his brother were jailed.
Another one again this year two men broke in to a house. The son came in to discover them and frightened them casing after one of them down the road. Upon the son coming back in the house he discovered one of the men was already back in there. He got in a fight and the intruder ended up dead.
I can go on and on. Basically fight for your rights as once there gone there next to impossible to get back.
To put this in historical perspective I have an old issue of the American Rifleman from back in the early 30s where in no less than the President of the NRA in an editorial calls upon Congress to prohibit the civilian sale of the then new .357 Magnum and limit it only to the Police and Military as it was far too powerful for civilian use!
Crap like this was a great part of the reason why the National Firearms Act sailed easily thru Congress in 1935.
Don’t think Gun Control is something novel to the 20th Century in this nation…as early as the 1830s a good number of cities in New England had prohibited the sale/possesion/carry of “tools of the Assassin” meaning Bowie Knives & Derringers. Heck you should read up on what the Feds were doing to Gun Owners in the late 1850s/early 60s in the State of Missouri and this was well prior to the outbreak of the War between the States.
Nothing new to any of this and both parties have some very bad history at abridging the rights of the People.

my only position on this matter is that its damned dangerous to assume the Republican party has our best interests in mind, heck even the NRA has capitulated to more Gun Law than they have ever prevented.

Do you remember how the Brady Bill was passed thru the Senate? A good number of Senators were opposed to it however as the Holiday break approached each went home entrusting his proxy to Republican Senate leader Bob Dole who promptly made his back room deal with the Democrats…without Beltway Bobs deciet there would be no Brady Act. The real odor came shortly afterward when the NRA actually endorsed Dole for his abortive Presidential bid!
Same same for the 94′ Feinstein Act which received strong support from so-called Moderates in the Republican Party
Perhaps the most dangerous of all Gun Haters in Congress is John McCain who was the very idiot who coined the term “Gun Show Loophole” and made it a major talking point in his debates with GW. In those debates the Only truly Pro RKBA Republican Presidential canidate was Allan Keyes. McCain has an incredible history of both sponsoring and supporting Gun Hater legeslation yet again the NRA officially endorsed this nut job over former NRA Board Member Bob Barr, I wont even bring up Ron Paul.

what you say may be true…but one must consider that EVERY session of congress and state legislatures some sort of anti-gun legislation is introduced…and it’s usually NOT good, meaningful legislation…it usually does nothing more than CREATE more of a morass than what is truly needed. more times than not, it’s a means to generate additional funding for LE or something of the like. or something so nonsensical it’s incredible like the times feinstein and newsome tried to tell the citizens of San Franscico they could not own firearms.

i certainly hope you’re right.
the big problem is that most legislators will simply change a word or two here and there and keep on trying to get such nonsense passed.
in many, if not most, cases, it’s the legislators themselves…harry reid and nancy pelosi being prime examples; bad legislators trying to pass bad legislation.
the true answer is in REMOVING such legislators…that is the beauty of the system we now have…the power of the VOTE.
leaving folks like pelosi and reid are usurping those rights as we speak; the right to own firearms is one of the prime examples. the US constitution says we, the citizens, have the right to own a firearm, some states, like california, refuse to acknowledge that right by not having it in their constitutions.
it’s simple (about the vote); USE IT OR LOSE IT…

To me the one thing that makes people truly free is the ability to fight back. Take that away and you have had it. All this legislation will do is criminalise what were good law abiding people and the criminal will still ignore the law. After all that is the very essence of a criminal. A similar thing happened in the UK were guns and large knives became very controlled and next to impossible to get hold of legally. Hand guns were effectively outlawed fullstops. Yet it did not even dent the crime statistics. Ironical crimes involving hand guns has rocketed over the decade post ban.
this is/has been in the making for a while now. the firearms forums have had it on & off over a period of time.
it is my belief that our legislators are NOT to be trusted when it comes to firearms and legislation pertaining to them…

Wasn’t England’s perspective more of a feudal requirement on the serfs than an actual recognized right of the Commoner in English Common Law?…at least that’s how it was explained to me many years ago by an English Gent who left the UK for Canada.
I admittedly do not recall his entire oral history but it was something to the effect that English Weapons Law had begun with William the Bastard requiring that all men under his rule to possess not only a Long Bow but to become proficient in it’s use. There were later changes both with the Magna Carta & the Treaty forced upon the Crown by Cromwell but in the end there were little recognitions that Commoners had any actual Right to Bear Arms as those who had power had no interest in losing it to the Mob.
The North American colonies were a totally different bag. Its fascinating how few folks realize how few in number the English colonists actually were in North America. For example New York State was formerly New Holland with its Colonial Capital…New Amsterdam, present day New York City. New Jersey, Delaware & beyond had been the Colony of New Sweden. What happened to these Colonies? English Naval Superiority which led to the being ceded to the English Crown. Even the Puritans in Massachusetts really were not “English” as the lot of them had been expelled from England for well over a decade and were recruited by the English Crown in Holland to create a Northern Colonial foothold in return for the promise to practice their queer brand of the Protestant faith. Basically once the Armada sank and Spain was unable to defend its claim on all of North & South America every European nation with a Navy jumped the Fence and declared squatters rights.
When the English seized control of much the Eastern Seaboard few of these “foreign” colonials ever returned to their home nations and England’s answer to raise the English body count was to install lesser noblemen in the Colonies and give them indentured servants, just a fancy word for white slavery. Anyways by the mid 1700s the English colonies in North America were rather unique and you also need to heap in the STRONG influence that the various Native Tribal Confederations had on Colonial thought.
Something that most folks ignore was what actually started the hostilities in the Revolution here. Yes Taxation and other crap played a part but what started the actual War was when the Crown decided it was going to seize the armories and powder magazines…this is what Lexington & Concord were all about.
As such when the new government was formed it was modeled after the Tribal Confederations which in due time was strengthened via the incorporation of the Constitution and something very very unique, an enumerated right of each individual Citizen to possess his own arms. In every other nation, at best it was a responsibility in like the Swiss Cantons. Only here was it made a broad right of the common folk.
This is what made it so easy to take arms away abroad as there was really zero right to possess from the outset and why it has been so difficult to do the same in the USA without using illegal nonsense such as imposing regulatory taxation.
It does sadden me what happened to England as I own a variety of original London Flinters, Percussions, even a few early Double Rifles from the Great English Gun making houses. Arms were one of the key things the English did extremely well until they slowly started pissing it all away in the mid 20th century.
