Half new SCBA tanks

I recently bought 3 66 cf tanks from Dayotat and filled them this weekend.

My 3-44 cf tanks were already full, so I set up the cascade system to partially fill each 66 cf tank. Then I ran the Shoebox for 6 hours, changed the piggy back Harbor Freight dessitant filters and ran another 5 hours. The next day I ran it for another 6 hours and again changed the Harbor Frieght filters and ran it another 9 hours.

This morning I opened up the holes in my styrofoam tank holder I used for the 44’s, to fit the 3 66’s, then put the cascade system on it and filled the Pygmy tank and then topped off the 66’s with the Shoebox.

So with the air I have on hand, I can shoot my FX Royale 400, 4500 times before I need to run the Shoebox again. 😯

The water logged filters turn pink and get put in the oven at 170 degrees until they turn blue again, then I seal them in a seal-a-meal bag to keep them fresh.

I changed the 44 for the 66’s not entirely for more volume, but also for more current hydro-able tanks. The 44’s were 1995,1996, 1997 dated and the three 66’s that replaced them are all 2004 if I remember right, they were hydroed this month.

I get some shit for running expired tanks but I really have no trouble running them. The way I look at it, it is a matter of risk management. With RM you look at a population doing a certain activity, such as being over weight, or smoking or texting while driving. You take the total population, how many accident or incidents you have and determine what the risk is. All three of the things I mentioned above are extremely dangerous, if your fat, smoke and text while driving your tripple fucked, but if your fat, smoke and text wihile filling your expired tanks, historically they still are not going to blow up. 😆

However with the thousands of expired tanks out there and the fact there have been absolutely no accidents with the expired scba tanks, there is no way to figure a risk, for there simply is no defineable risk at this point.

I get in heated arguments on the Yellow about this, my latest answer to the sky is falling idiots, is show me the accidents, no one can show me the accidents involving air guners blowing up expired scba tanks for there have been none. One scba tank in service that was abused by a fireman by exposing it to corrosive chemicals in the back of his truck is the sole scba accident that can be cited. The owner of the stock making company in Indonesia blew himself up recently with a homade PCP pistol cylinder, but that is a different matter entirely.

So now I have to decide if I want to refill these 44’s or sell them cheap. One expires next month, it looks new, the other two are scratched up some but not frayed, I thought about shooting one at about 100 yards and filming it, but not being a camera buff, I am not sure I could pull that off.

Right now, historically and mathmatically, you stand a substantial greater risk to be struck by a astroid than having a expired SCBA tank used for airgunning blowing up. I am sure that statement will gall some of you, but like I say, show me the carnage. 😉

The thing is right now, I am fit, I don’t smoke or text at all, have recently hyroed tanks, so I should live forever. 😛
