Hammer locking problem

Well. My gun has been pretty much sorted out. Most of the real problems are out of the way. Now, I have this one. It’s not a big problem. It’s just annoying.

When I cock my gun, about 4/5 times, it fails to lock in place. I have to sit there and recock and recock and it will eventually lock into place. Once it’s locked, it doesn’t come undone. Never had it shoot or anything. So, it’s just something about it that doesn’t want to hold the hammer back. Any ideas?

I did the trigger mod for him and put the sear spring in the better position so that “shouldnt” be the problem…. unless he’s been “tinkering” again.

I had exactly the same issue with a lot of preload. Wouldn’t cock without MANY attempts.
Swapped to a differently profiled hammer (still stock Gunpower/Airforce) and the problem disappeared. Not one issue, with an otherwise identical setup including preload.

I just don’t feel that the whole stock sear/hammer arrangement is safe. I don’t have much confidence in it anyway.
In my experience moving/strengthening the sear spring (Bodicount’s idea) definitely reduces the problem, as does reducing preload (Y Diddy’s idea).
I once suggested a steeper sear angle and was laughed out of town ( 😥 😆 ) but the engagement between hammer and sear is undoubtedly influential in the reliability of the mechanism.

More preload/stronger hammer spring improves the fps standard deviation, but as we know it also crunches trigger groups.
Hopefully the problem can simply be cured by a beefed up sear spring and slightly reduced preload. It would certainly be a cheap cure!

If the reduced preload creates a power issue then you could always lighten the valve spring to compensate.

Alternatively, don’t do anything, keep struggling, and only alter it when you have a near fatal mishap.

Mine would do the same thing with too much preload. Try turning the wheel down a bit.
