Hammer size?

The standard hammer seems a bit sloppy in the body, is this for a good reason or do the manufacturers make it this way to avoid fine tuning of individual rifles?
As it is is would seem to invite less than purely linear travel and potentially less than perpendicular impact on the breach block since the sear holds it against one side of the bore until release & then it’s free to rattle about all over the place, is this the case?
Anyone tried Nylatron or PTFE buttoning or full hammer?
