Q:

Handpump broke and here is what I got. 190cf tank!!!

I knew from reading the forum that my AF handpump would break and it did. I decided that I was not going to keep buying handpumps at $200 a shot.

I was very close to buying a compressor and a tank but didn’t. $$$$$

I was also looking at carbon fiber tanks @4500psi (66cf) but they were expensive and last 15 years max (if you buy brand new) many of the used ones only have close to 5 years left. $$$

To make a long story short I found a dive shop who had a new 190cf steel tank that gets filled to 4400psi. The thing is a monster at 87 pounds empty (that is why no divers would buy it) but it is perfect for me because I don’t do any shooting except at home, therefore the only time I need to carry it is to get it filled. Plus the steel tank can last for a long time as long as it passes inspections and hydros.

Using the Airhog calculator and filling to 2500 (that is where my talon likes it) and refilling at 1900psi. I figure I can get 120 fills out of this tank. This may last me a year between fills. Well maybe 6 months.

Seemed to be the best fit for me. $500 with custom fill adapter. $$

Sounds like a really good setup gfaust8. Maybe you could figure a way to strap some wheels to it to make it a little more portable…..
Congrats

I’ll 2nd that.

Very nice find indeed!

It is a Beuchat 190 made by Heiser.

I understand they have not been made for a while. The one he sold me was “new old stock”. Never used but probably manufactured 10 years ago.

What’s the name on the tank? A link maybe?

It is only about 36 inches tall. It is not one of those 5 foot tall cylinders that they cascade together. He had that setup in the dive shop.

Here is a quote from the scuba board:

” used to work for Beuchat USA a few years back and the 190s were a nightmare! They required special valves that we couldn’t get and they were WAY too heavy for the average diver to use. We did find that many people were just using them as portable filling stations. In other words, they would top off their other cylinders with the gas (usually nitrox) from the biggie. The biggest problem that dealers had with these was that most didn’t realize that they were only 190 cubic foot when filled to 4400 psi and that their compressors were going to toast themselves if they pumped that high regularly. Filling them to 3300 psi only yielded 140 cubic feet. for the weight and buoyancy characteristics, it just wasn’t worth it.”

Divers did not like them. But I do.

It’s a ‘scuba storage’ tank, so they can fill if the pump breaks down…and they don’t have to run the compressor to fill either. Usually they have several cascaded together.

Yeah right… and the penguins are gonna beat the Wings too. 😆 😉

87 pounds empty? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot… that ain’t no scuba gear. What was it made for?

nice find!!
