Q:

Has anyone ever oiled a scope?

Hey guys, i just got a center point 4-16×40 scope with AO and the AO ring on the objective is harder to turn that i would like. I would like to solve this by dropping some oil into the crack between the ring and the main tube but I worry about the oil damaging the optics or just basically screwing up the whole scope. I’d appreciate any advice on how to remedy this or a warning if this would damage it. Thanks!

The best solution is to return it to WalMart or the company purchased from for exchange to a new one. Or else call Centerpoint and send it back to them for warranty service/exchange for a new one. Sales receipt required for exchange at WalMart.

Not a good idea to oil a scope, reason being, if the oil wicks it’s way into the scope, onto the lens, the lens will fog or steak, light and dark areas could result.

Not a good idea because the oil used could dissolve/deteriorate the orings, letting air in, and the nitrogen out. Again causing a fogging/moisture/oil inside the scope condition.

I don’t recommend oiling a scope, “If you do use a O-ring friendly lube.” Maybe divers silicone! Don’t use a spray dry silicone, because the carrier/liquid is very destructive, destroyed o-rings the first and only time I tried that! I ruined a cheap co2 pistol!

I didn’t vote, I returned two centerpoints and sold the third one, never opening the box. Different issues, good warranty, use it. If they determine not a factory defect, oil damaged, no warranty!

I tried using TSI321 synthetic lube http://www.tsi301.com/tsi321main.htm on my Crossman 3-9×32 AO-that had the same problem and it did not fix it. This is the slickest lube I ever seen and have to be very careful with this stuff, because a drop will wick along way from where it was put. It also drys so you can’t see it, but it’s there anyway? It is O-ring and plastic friendly-and scope friendly for me.

Good luck
