Q:

Hawke scope, POI consitency over varying AO and pwr settings

Looking at getting the Hawke Varmint 4-16×44 side focus for the Talon-P though want to be sure it maintains consistent POI through all zoom/power ranges and also through all the varying ranges will be set.

Short version, based on the experience below, (granted only one Hawke scope and their cheap line at that), I am skeptical of all Hawke scopes now, even though the Varmint is much higher quality line vs the Sport HD that has essentially a useless AO, I’m still a bit leery. Any experiences with the Hawke Varmint sidefocus line?
I have a Leapers 6-24×56 SWAT on the AA S510, maintains dead on Zero at all ranges form 10 yards out to 80 yards at varying powers as well, the Leapers side focus scopes are just so darn heavy, (this one at 32.2oz…) vs the much lighter Hawke Varmint line… Light weight and sidefocus and at least 12x on the top end a must and of course on the budget end. Would love a FFP, maybe in a year or two…

The experience, I have a cheapo Hawke Sport HD 4×32 AO and it suffers from severe POI shift while using the AO.
Example, Target 30 yards, AO set 30 yards, scope zero to POI at 30 yards, all is good. Target at 12 yards, (this particular applications “near” zero cross over point), AO still set at 30 yards, obviously a little blurred and some parralax can be seen when bobbing my head about in the scope field of vision, (approx 1/4″ or so at the target), center up head to the scope best as can, POI is zero. Now set the AO at 12 yards, focus is crisp and clear, POI is now 3/4″ to the left at 12 yards! Spin AO back to 30 yards shootin target at 12 yards POI is back at center, or as close as parallax shows is MUCH closer than using the AO as intended. I didn’t bother shooting the 30 yard target withe AO set at 12 just assumed the 3/4″ POI shift would be exaggerated that much more at that range. I have since taped the AO at 25 yards, (she shoots 10-30 yards with this rig, more so 20-30), sighted in at far zero and just deal with on it this gun for my daughter.

Leapers 4×16-44 is much lighter and cheaper than your big 56mm scope. Illuminated, sidewheel, zeroing turrets.

Lighter yes, but only slightly, 3.7 oz, (28.5oz vs 32.2oz). The Hawke 3-12×44 Varmint and 4-16×44 Varmint both weigh almost a full lb less than the portly 6-24x Leapers, (17.8 oz vs 32.2oz), both side focus, 3-12 focus down 10 yrds, 4-16 focuses down 15. The Varmint line of Hawke doesn’t offer illuminated reticle though don’t really use that feature any how and the Varmints are 1″ tube vs 30mm.

From my searching seems all 30mm tube side focus under $500 are heavy weights, 25oz and up.
