Q:

Heavy Hammer / hammer slap mod info needed

I went by Lowes today in hopes of finding the “Heavy Hammer” also known as a bronze sleave bearing /bushing… No luck. I then went by a electric motor and plumbing supply house that has everything and he wanted the exact dimensions to order it. The only dimension I have is 1″ o.d. Can anyone tell me the inner dimension and overall length?

I’m trying to make a diy hammer that cures the dreaded hammer slap and I’ve read so much and still have questions. My Condor .22 has MAJOR hammer slap that can be heard from a great distance away! Thanks.

P.S. I know that Tony and others here offer a modded hammer with a o-ring in the face, but honestly I’m a diy guy to some degree and try to save some $$$ when I can. God knows I’ve dropped plenty of coin already on this endless rabbit hole!

I make my hammers .980″ to 985″ OD. It seems the Frames vary from 1.010″ to 1.016″. I’m at work so I can’t measure a stock one.

and they work good

Like 45 grams and and 20 grams for the spacer.

Measure you 12″ .22 barrel and tell me the size. I can make one hammer that will work on the 12″ and make the 24″ barrel match it. One hammer and make the barrels the same.

Gotcha. I need to dig out my micrometer if I can find it. Does anyone know how much a standard Condor hammer weighs?

My apologies Doug. I didn’t realize that was you, as I wasn’t familiar with your TAG handle. Those pics are wonderful and I love your design. I’m still trying to save up some funds and in the meantime, I’m trying to make my Condor as quiet as possible.

That is all that has to be removed from a 24″ barrel. Anybody know what a 12″ barrel diameter is.

Thanks for the offer Dyotat100, but I want to research the whole hammer thing better before I start altering barrels. I may get back to you later about your offer, but as of now I just don’t know enough about this to feel comfortable.

Again, I wanted to do a diy hammer until I could research this better. I don’t even know how much your hammers are and what design they are etc. Can you send or post pics?

I inquired about the barrel guided hammer that Doug has been making (current in the mods forum) and unfortunately, I would have to send him my barrel to turn it and reduce it on his lathe.

He said, “Because it is a .22 and those barrels are not a standard outer diameter, he would have to alter the barrel.” On top of that, because I use a 12″ .22 barrel as well which has a different O.D, I would have to buy a second one for it as well.

This is when I decided to try a standard hammer design and give it a go diy style until I read more about my options. It’s a bummer, because I really liked the quality and the theory of the hammer he is turning out!

I would really like a reliable, quiet hammer that will work for both my 12″ and 24″ .22 barrels. Any ideas?

I tried the bushing route, I was not impressed.

PMG me your address I think I still have it around here.

I am using a barrel guided hammer I got from somewhere, and I cut it down to 95 grams from 126. With a medium powered spring, I get 91 FPE with my cast bullets and the best accuracy I have so far.

The following link shows the diy hammer that I am going to try, unless there is one that members feel is more up to date.

If anyone has part numbers for the bronze bushing or for the rubber bushing I would appreciate it. Also, any comments on the pros and cons of barrel guided vs frame guided hammers would be great too. I would like to try a diy hammer until I can afford to put a real hammer in it like Tony’s, or Dougs.
