Q:

hello all, noob here need some help advice about polishing

hello

First of all i must admit, this is a absolute amazing website, thank you guys, in this great community for putting it together, it really does help noobs like my self with various problems and gives excellent advice and solututions to these problems, how ever big or small. thank you all once again.

I also have got a quick question to ask, i know it will seem pretty stupid to most of you (if not all) i have recently seen somewhere about mirrior polishing the barrel, and thought about doing it, could some one point me in the right direction please, i do have a dremel, and little polishing discs, what else do i need?

Thank you in advance for your time

(if this is in the wrong section sorry)

Thanks mate, be about a week or two before it all goes back together and fired up. since have a few bits coming, plus bottle has been sent for repair

will post pictures of when it’s done

That will work just fine 😀

Looks good

i decided to listen to Walkonkings advice down to a t, and only polished the breach area, here’s the picture of it, it doesnt look that shiny in the picture but in real life theres a little shine on it 😀

Thank you Walkonking, for the welcome mate much appreciated, yeah the area i was hoping to get to a mirror like finish was the breach area to about half way down roughly, i did see it somewhere but cant seem to find it.

Langnasen thanks for the info, i’ll be having a go today, probably take me a couple of days if not longer, will try to post the pics, once its done.

Polishing metal is a bit of a passion I picked up with biking, and as it’s about the only thing around here I know much about I thought I’d get in quick and try and lose a few bruises. 😆

If the surface is sound don’t use too rough a grade, it’ll be counter-productive. If you’re removing bluing don’t be tempted to scour it off with a rough grade, just be patient and take your time with a smoother one, it’ll pay dividends.

Welcome to the TAG.

Now exactly what part of the barrel do you wish to polish? Polishing the area where the breech slides has it benefits. Just don’t get to aggressive and remove to much metal.

Hello

Strewth Langnasen, that was one fast reply, if it wasnt so late i’ll be cracking on with it, got to wait for tomorrow now sir.

Thanks again

Many grades of wet & dry abrasive cloth. I use 600 down to 1500, and even by hand achieve a mirror polish. If you spin the part in a chuck and go in with the 1500 it comes up real quick. I’ve also added in some Holts Micro-compound on occasion which gives addes lustre. 🙂
