Q:

Help with .22 R3M

Hi Guys.

Hope u having a great Easter. Anyhow I just want some advice regarding a friends R3M .22. He received it new last week and fitted the offset moderator. He just cannot get the gun to group at ALL. I mean like shotgun groups at 50m (5-7″ grouping). The chrony string seems fine like averaging 890 ish. What and where could we start looking for the apparent fault? He is terribly frustrated and now wants to sell but I’m a believer in this gun and hope some of the experts here can advise.

Any help/advice would be highly appreciated.

Hi Guys,

Should clipping be ruled out the only other issue may be Indexing causing the pellets to be shaved.

Like I mentioned above, single load them and see.
I had problems with some of the aluminum mags.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the input.

I have removed the offset moderator and shot groups after that with the standard moderator, where I also received shotgun like groups.

Barrel definitely screwd into the breech block properly.

I will try the tape method and torch from the back of received after the breech block has been removed to look at concentricity and eliminate clipping.

On inspection of the barrel with a torch the crown looks great and so does the inside of the barrel.

I’m assuming a leak or inproper positioning of the transfer port washer would simply cause the point of impact to fall on a verticle scale and not cause shotgun like groups?

Should clipping be ruled out the only other issue may be Indexing causing the pellets to be shaved.

Hum ………… yes, I second that.

There is also the sight in test which is just plain old Russian Roulette with others guns.
But on the other hand the Matador is safer when removing the receiver/breech before peering into the muzzle end to sight in the internal alignments of the baffles to the barrel with a flashlight shining in on the other end.

I know this thread is about the Lelya, but the matador offset moderator is attached using the same method..

If clipping is suspected it could be worth a shot (no pun intended 😉 )
Gregs method with the tape works quite well to discount clipping :8:
Just a thought, when the offset mod was installed the barrel didn’t unscrew from the breech end a bit ? It’s happened to me and I just tightened it back up by hand and made sure it was fully home at the breech end before reinstalling the mod

I’m guessing JSB 18.1’s are being used as well ?

Thanks for replies gentlemen. Will advise and let u know.

I would vote on pellet clipping. The offset moderator could cause it.

Did he try single loading ?
Check the scope rails 2 hex screw for tightness.

Also try my Tape Test to check LDC aliment issues.
Yes, it works I use it to test out my LDC that I make. This LDC is back and forward ported to maximize the accuracy ! No sound (nos) from muzzle, just the sizzling of the pellet coming out of it. Sorry, not for sale !

Place masking tape on and push it on firmly with your thumb to make it indent inwards a little. Mark the hole out line it carefully with a pencil. Load up and fire once, remove it and tape it down on something it will show how center the bore is in relevant to the shroud.

Added note after taping I place the muzzle directly against my corrugated cardboard rubber mulch pellet trap and fire, it makes of a cleaner hole.
If when you try it again and the hole is at a slightly different place I would suspect it’s clipping on the inside baffle.
It doesn’t need to be exactly on center but if it’s very close to one side I would suspect that it’s a problem.

Pellet size 5.52
Crown looks fine on inspection
Not sure on rifling
Changed the moderator to original and same thing

Could be one or more of the following…

1. Pellet head size.
2. Crown of the barrel.
3. Rifling not uniformed.
4. Moderator clipping.

Comes down to elimination. Try removing the offset moderator and test again.

Forgot to mention that I have absolutely no doubt in his shooting ability. He is taking pigeons at 195m with his Vulcan .22

This man CAN shoot
