Help with Talon power settings
Hello All,
I have a .177 Talon SS and don’t have a chrono right now. I want to set the power to about 18-19 FPE. I understand all rifles are a little different, but does anyone have an idea of where I might set the power adjuster to get me in the ball park?
Any help would be appreciated.

My Talon SS/22/12 in. hits max power at 9.5 on power wheel. Any higher than That and I’m just wasting air. My top hats at .078, it was at .111 from factory.
However it will most likely be FT specials which seem to shoot best in this gun. I have no problem figuring out the power, or what velocity to shoot a particular weight pellet to get the energy I need. I just don’t have a chronograph right now so I have no way to determine the exact speed. That’s why I was hoping for some input on where others may have had their power adjusters set when they get to about 18-19 FPE. If I had a chrono I wouldn’t be asking, it would already be done.
Anyone remember seeing somebody’s research on velocity increases vs. the power adjuster setting? That would be helpful.
So, electrician, you believe that with the adjuster on 11 I’ll get about 20 fpe? That would be helpful to know as I could back it down from there just a little for a start.

The range for your gun is 400 to 1000 fps which adjust from 0 to what ever on your adjuster so midway is about 750/6 or 7 . Using a 9 gr pellet
with your adjuster on 11 or 1000 FPS should be around 19.98 FPE.

Much as we might like it, no such ‘adjustment formula’ exists. There are just too many variables (TH setting, hammer weight, spring constant, friction, O-ring fit, barrel dimensions, and so on). It fact it’s basically not possible to set up two tanks that perform the same on a given gun through the adjustment range.
If a talented ‘smith with extensive experience with these guns can’t set up two tanks to behave the same it’s not very realistic to expect every tank shipped by AF to behave like the others. Settings on one gun can’t be assumed to work the same on the next one.
The right move, IMO, is to get the chronograph if you’re going to be ‘number happy’. If you need to do it on the cheap, you can try to match downrange impacts with a program like Chairgun to estimate MV.
FWIW, I recommend the Combro CB625, first rate unit, very compact, under $50 delivered to the US (takes less than a week). Get it and you won’t have to guess again.
