Q:

Hey Airgun "smiths" can this barrel be machined to

…the Condor rifles or other AF guns?

http://talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=238529#238529

It’s .257 and seems to like cast bullets very well. Can the AF valves generate that kind of juice? I’m guessing that’s the limiting factor but it’s a guess. I have no idea.

What say y’all?

WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with RC. The Condor is not the same type gun or shall i say the valving is not the same. Well, alot of things between a Condor and a QB based gun are not the same.

I believe new valve parts would have to be machined/fabricated to make that kinda power outta a CONDOR. Look how much work went into CYNUS’ condor when he did the big bore change and also Voltar.

I say start with the RIGHT gun in the first place and you’ll be less stressed in the end.

It should, in my experience going to heavier bullets in a given twist is where you ran into trouble, as too slow a twist will not stabilize heavier bullets.

A good example is the .223. A 1-12 will not stabilize 69 grainers and is by far the best twist for 45 to 55 grainers and is used in many bolt action .223’varmit rifles.

If you step up the veloctiy with a bigger case, like the 22-250 Ackley improved, it still will not stabiize the 69 grainers running them to the point of over pressure, I know I tried.

But then you take a 1/7 twist which will stabiize 69 and beyond, will also shoot the 55 grainers well, or at least with acceptable accuracy. That is why the military uses that twist, so it will stablize the heavier tracers, the 62-69 military loads and if by off chance the 55 grainers are used it will stabilze them also.

Another example is the 458 bore. 1-22 is dandy for the 350 to 405 grian bullets, but has some trouble with the 550’s. But a 1/16 will handle the heavy bullets and the lighter ones.

You can also casterate that choke on a LW barrel if your using .255 bullets, the molds RJ uses are not well suited for .255, as sizing them down from .258 or in my case the65 grain Lyman mold I have like RJ’s cast out at .261, sizing them from .261 to .255 will deform the bullets.

The barrel liners the makers like Dan Mcvey at XPAirguns and Haley use are liners for firearms barrels.

They are used to replace barrels that are worn out and you wish to save the original lettering on the badly eroded barrel, so you ream out the original barrel and epoxy in a barrel liner, in this case with a .257, most likely a 25-20. Or in the case of my barrel a 45 LC as it is .452,

The problem is, these barrels are cheap, and altho they are extremely accurate, or at least in XPairguns and Haley’s case, the interior is never as smooth as the LW and the irregularities can easily be seen, but again they shoot great.

Mcvey says his barrels gain velocity as you shoot, the reason they do is those irregularaties are smoothed out as you shoot reduceing speed robbing frictiion

But they are easier to install for Mcvey and Haley, due to the fact that barrel blanks for firearms barrels are usually 1inch, and when your done machining them they have a definate taper. If you tried to machine a firearms barrel down to the point that it clears the pressure tube all the way you would have an uneven barrel even if a center support is used and it would take precious shop time and raise the price.

So that is why they use the firearms liners.

But the reason you want to use the LW barrel with the choke bobbed is that if you used .255 in a .257 or .258, most likely you would not be able to hit your ass with both hands, and if you have a 25 Condor, you already have the barrel you need.

But like I said in the first answer, if you shoot Jerry’s slug they will work in a stock Condor and save you a butt load of work.

But if you want to cast those heavy slugs, and if want to stick with a Condor and you have a 22 and need to buy a barrel, get the liner, it is easy to machine down, buy AF bushings, buy all the Airarcher fire control parts, spring, hammer, and valve parts.

If you want the faster velocity, and want to cast more bullet weight and can live with 2 very powerful shots in airgun terms and have a Shoebox or compressor, because you will go thru a eco systems worth of air every time you go shooting, get the Haley.

Me having two very good 25 LBT’s, if I was going to do the powerful 25 again, I would get the Haley……

And eat crow while Riverside watches. 😳 😛

Thanks for the reply. I was just curious.

What about that length and twist rate. If it works on the heavier slugs, it should be good on your lighter cast bullets, correct?

I doubt it.

I run a very heavy spring and hammer with a RL valve and Airarcher tapered derlin valve seat and valve retainer and valve spring.

With a 3200 fill my highest velocity has been 1030 with a 56 grain bullet.

That gives me about 7 shot BTW from 1032 to 920 fps to give you an idea how much air is going down range, but only one in that 1032 range.

Dayotat may be able to machine the barrel and make a completely redesigned valve that would come close tho.

And 56 grains is nowhere close to 85.

The Haleys, Xpairguns et al are completely differently designed rifles, with about half the air compasity ,thus the two shots per fill. I could be mistaken tho, but like RJ and Tof, I o this stuff daily and have not even come close to RJ’s 25.

And I get 600 FPE with my XP Ranger 45 as I am sure RJ does with his Haley 45, the AF design does not have the flow room in that valve to get what RJ is getting.

Not to mention the stress on the other parts in that design, like triggers and valve stems.

But again folks like Dayotat do make bigger valves that take the design into a different dimension.

But in the end your probably better off going elsewhere to a rifle that was designed for it.

Considering the cost of a Condor, barrel and valves and hammers and springs to go to the unknown, the Haleys and XP guns are a bargain at 1100 to 1200.

I am sure RJ and Tof would agree.

If you want to get higher energy with your Condor get a 25 and some Jerry’s slugs.
