Q:

Hill pump

Is it worth it? Can’t keep/find reliable source for tank fills. How many calories should I expect to burn using it?

I have been using the AirForce pump now since October for my TSS and Edge. It is an older one I picked up used at a good price.

I have had no issues with it, but if I was to buy a new pump, I would definitely go with the new Hill. Besides the lifetime warranty, It is more efficeint than most of the competition and is designed to be easily rebuilt by the owner.

I started out with the Airforce pump because it is a direct connect to the Airforce rifles. It filled my Condor tank twice before it failed. I never let it get hot. Fortunately It failed quickly so I returned it and got the Hill instead. Three months now and it gets used almost every day. Keep it lubed with diver’s silicone and it will perform every time.

Remember, the Enemy of the pump is Excessive Heat ❗

Do Not pump fast ❗ Like speeding, you may not get there at all.

Do Not pump for extended lengths of time ❗ Excessive heat can build up slowly too.

Do Not park the pump near a source of heat ❗ I left my Hill pump by a furnace register and the lube hardened in the check valves and a little corrosion started. I cleaned it out and installed the repair kit and got it back in business. I rarely use it now that I have a Shoebox Compressor but I did use it after a long spell and it still works fine.

You can go wrong buying pumps been there done that, I first got into pcp with a maurader with the benjamin pump, then bought the axsor pump. The axsor failed almost out of the box sent it back they fixed it sent it back it failed again it now resides in the city dump, the benjamin pump has done well but has been repaired many times, the piston o ring kept failing until I put hills piston seal in it. I just bought a hill and it is the best pump I have, it fills faster and easier than the others. My advise go with the hill and dont look back.

I have 3 Airforce bottles for my 2 rifles and I only use a Hill pump. Both my rifles are set up to operate between 2300psi down to 1700psi, it takes less than 5min to top off. I’ve had mine for about 3 yrs and it just goes on-service every 6-8 months and replace the drypack every 3-4 months or so and you’ll have unlimited air whenever you need it. I relube the main piston o’ring once a month as I do a lot of shooting.

The hill is without a doubt the best hand pump, and is well worth the price! How much work it is filling depends on the size of the resivoir on your rifle. I can fill my s200 from 100 bar to 190 in less than five minutes with out breaking a sweat but it has a tiny tank. Bottle guns I’m sure would burn some calories filling. You may as well take a look at the shoebox. It cost a little more than the hill hand pump but if you shoot a lot then it would be worth it.
