Home Made Brass End Cap For R&L Shroud On Stubby
Well I found out my buddy with the machine shop will let me borrow the equipment again this weekend so I will attempt to replace the R&L end cap on the shroud with a brushed brass one. For me being a light weight machinist, the challenge will be the threads to fit the inside of the shroud tube but I think I have an understanding of how to do it down now on the lathe. A little practice on some throw away stuff and I should be ready. I have not decided on which knurle pattern to use on the outside edge just yet or maybe just to brush finish it to match the trigger and breech knob. The gun will be too purdy to shoot.
I am still thinking about the safety wire and setup which I dislike but I haven’t figured out a something just yet. Has anyone done anything to the safety other than to just remove it?

I have seen several, they are very good machines but like anything, you can abuse them to the point they become useless. If it’s been maintained well and will hold good tolerances and the ways are straight, it will always be a good buy, regardless of brand. the only issue with the SB is the belt drive, I have heard from other owners who were having a hard time finding replacement belts. the one I learned on had a leather belt that was fabricated by the owner. the only other thing to check for is power drive and quick change gearset. If it has both, I’d buy it in a hearbeat.

Yes – it’s a 36″ South Bend that the guy wants to sell me real cheap w/ his tools. Are the newer ones a lot better then? This one is all I have ever used.
If he wants to sell it, buy it….. They are good lathes and will take a hit when it happens… Not that I’ve ever crashed 😳 😳

Nicely done. is that a southbend? learned on a machine like that, gosh, now about 40 years ago? Have some fond memories of those. Looks like the ways have recently been scraped.

Good idea. That would be real fast.
Uh. I missed that. Actually it is a simple twin-wheel knurling tool you press against the piece in the lathe and then you hand turn the lathe. It didn’t take more than 3 minutes to cut in the diamonds. That was the easiest part.

Except for the 32 tpi threads this wasn’t too bad. The knurling is real simple. Sorry for fuzzy phone pictures. Safety wire needs help last….

Thanks for the info. Yes it has both and he has extra belts. He also goes to extremes to maintain it and avoid any grit, etc. that he has lectured me on – lol. He also explained to me how the ways were “finished” to hold the special oil he uses. They have what looks like a slight finish marks that were put on them if that makes any sense. He also purchased most of te add-ons for it that were available.
