Q:

Homemade Pellet Trap

I used an unserviceable SCUBA tank for a pellet trap.

Without the fins on the side the pellets would continue around the curve and zip right back at the shooter (the welds suck-I know). A white sheet showed that flattened pellet fragments flew out no further than three feet, no matter if the pellet hit the back or the swinging target. Most of the fragments collected in the base.

I don’t think I will shoot this in the house without a tarp or something if shooting on metal. I may just get some gooey backstop stuff and shoot paper.

The max shooting distance is only 15 yards, as seen in the lower picture.

Old tanks are great for traps. You could have made a “snail” type trap with it had you wanted to. Those work really well.

I do have an nine-month old who crawls around and eats whatever she finds.

That was my big concern, so thanks for sharing the experience.

since we moved to california i have been looking for a good solution….the only one i have found is thats sticky ballistic stuff or AC putty

everything else ends up spreading lead fragments which i dont care much about…any vacume can handle that, and is relatively safe, as long as noone eats it (kids might drop food on floor and eat it anyway including lead fragments)….but the dust can get whirled up into the air….so if you have kids that would be a major hazard to them….adults can usually handle quite a bit of lead without ill effects….but kids cant

i like your trap very original

i have used a quarter inch steel plate with 10 layers of carpet on it….it worked very well, but it was pure hell to disassemble it when we moved not to mention the insane amounts of dust and lead that had collected over a couple of years…i would rate it quite dangerous when we took it appart, i had help from a friend, and both of us needed masks and a shower afterwards….clothe was covered in it too…by washing it we contaminted the washer and dryer as well….

so i use a putty trap now….works very well….use gloves to remold it once in a while….when saturated with lead dump it same place as you would car batteries
