how do you like SWFA SS 10x42m?

Hi
Anyone has experience with this scope? I like fine cross-hair and side focus. It has both and only 14″ long. I also consider HK4017, but Hawke sidewind is heavy and long.

What part is that JOE. Light gathering? He talks about the size of the exit pupil. In the trade, this is called the twilite factor. And yes, the size here does mater. 😆 BUT, is way over used. It does not take into account the amount in the circle of light, regardless of the Dia of the exit pupil. A 6mm exit pupil can still be very dim. Just as a 4mm can be fery bright. These differences depend on quality of glass. Coatings. Lens alignment, Objective alignment, and a number of other things. Not just the exit pupil size.
It is almost as stupid as saying the larger the tires, the faster the car! Regardless of HP and Weight. Yeah. right! 🙄
They always cover up this ignorance by saying things like a younger set of eyes can use a larger exit pupil, while an older set cannot use as large an exit pupil because the older eyes do not widen their pupils as much. Bull shit. Sure, they do not.
BUT, ever had a cheap scope that it was hard to find the sight picture fast when needed, or had a poor eye reliefe. Guess why. Yep. Exit pupil. This is where it is important. NOT LIGHT GATHERING!!! This is doen by the quality and size of the objective-coatings, number of lens-and very importantly, the dia. of the Ocular lens. (thats’ the eye piece lens.) 😉
This is why almost all top brand binos and scopes have a larger ocular lens than the cheap ones. To help in exit pupil alignment.
And just about every expert misses the basics. Every damed time. And there seem to be a lot of un-educated experts! 👿 Hell, even the scope sales sheets on the net list the exit pupil as brightness factor. Well, It’s not. It’s nothing more than a sales gimmic, put out by the add office. And has very little to do with true low light performance. I wish they would change the name all together!

I got my SWFA SS 10×42 yesterday and love it. It’s very thin reticle and clear glass.
I put it on my Condor SS today and got one hole group at 36 yards. It’s shorter than my Sidewind 6x24x56 and lighter.
I just read the explination of twilite factor given on the link ablve and it was 100% WRONG! Totally full of shit!
Who-ever wrote it has done nothing more than read a few factory flyers hawking their scopes. A 10×40 gathers more light thatn a 6×50. Bull f’n shit. This guy is a moron! 👿
Twilight factor is nothng more thatn a mathamatical formula between mag and objective dia. With this equalsion, it would make no difference whether the lenses were coke bottles or fine HD Glass. But has been hawked in Sales Flyers for years. It’s very miss leading at best, and a total lie at worst. The exit pupil does NOT determine how much light enters the eye. Only the dia. of the cone of light entering the eye.. 🙄
And you can see this crap listed on every scope sales site on the net. 👿
And to top it off, the light gathering and resolution are two different things. Sure, they compliment each other, but are NOT the same at all. Grrrr!
I hate it when these places write articles trying to present themselves as pros, and don’t know their ass’s from a hole in the ground! 😆
congrats! Hopefully you will like it. If I ever have the coin, I would like to get this one in the future. It would be perfect for future range estimation when airguns start approaching 1,000 yards 😀 First focal plane, Mil-Quad reticle on 15x zoom…who needs a laser range finder! 😎

There are many reviews on this scope out there. Here is but one:
I know that the MOA turrets have a ton of adjustment. Something like 120 or 130. Not sure what mine has in Mils but I guess it would be comparable.

I like that is has 11 mils of holdover 10 + 1 to the bottom post. When I do stretch out my .257 this is going to be beneficial. What I like about the mil/mil in the short time that I have played around with it is if you are high, low, left, or right say “2.5” mil you can either use your reticle to adjust or simply dial in “2.5” on your turrets and your dead on. You get five mils per rotation, but again, since I haven’t the need for it, I have not bothered finding out exactly how much internal Mils I have.

Do you have a picture of your scope and reticle?
I like mine very much. It is not the side focus model as I was trying to save as much money on the purchase and I bought it used. Mine is the Mil/Mil model and once you get used to it I actually prefer it over my Mil/Moa scopes. Unlike you, I wish the reticle was a bit thicker. The clarity of the glass is amazing for a “tasco”, lol. I bought mine based on all the grand reviews it received from the powder burner community and once I saw that it focused down to 10 yards..that sealed the deal. Good scope for sure! Good luck with your decision.
