Q:

how do you make your own barrel?

I was checking out Brownells since they have lots of gunsmithing tools…what is a reamer? what is a barrel liner? what exactly do I need if i wanna make my own .22 airgun barrel? Thanks guys!

Reamer is like an ultra precise drill bit. A drill usually produces a hole that looks round, but if you were to measure it carefully you’d find it’s really an odd polygonal shape, not truly round. So if you want an actual ROUND hole of a precise diameter, you first drill slightly undersized, then ream the hole out to finish size. It is also a term used for cutters designed to make chambers for specific firearms. This is not applicable to airguns, although you do need a leade into the rifling even in airguns.

A barrel liner is like a kitty liner. You line the potty with it so you can just pick it up and throw it away later, except it goes into your beer barrel instead of the litter box.

You need to take a machine course or read up on the net. Lots of free info out there.

good luck

hehe..thanks guys, im just super curious~~~

takes alot to make a barrel , even a crappy one would take you a very long time to make . an lots of $
ive made many an id still never consider making one in a size i can buy already done .

Save yourself thousands of dollars and just buy a barrel from Talon Tunes.

What you WILL need is a good understanding of how to use a lathe and read a micrometer …once you have a blank that has the correct bore size .217-.22 all that is needed is to turn the o.d. And crown the barrel…liners are used when you whant a hard chrome bore to resist being “shot out” but with pellets you will have to go through thousands of pellets just to see a measurable difference…but when you buy a barrel blank it will come rifled …but if you arnt 100% shure of your abilities don’t even try cause you cannot rush and you only get one shot to get it rite….if you have any questions feel free to ask…on a side note if you go with a powder burner barrel you will lose some velocity but if you get a good one you will gain accuracy and the ability to use just about any pellet with decent groups…

First I would recommend Taking a Machine Shop apprentice course with on the job training, about a 4 to 5 year school.

Then access to a machine shop or purchase a Lath with all the accessories, with calipers, micrometers and dial indicator. A blue print for the part being made. A barrel blank for the caliber you want?

I don’t think you would need a reamer to make an air rifle barrel. I believe they are used in making the chamber for the cartridge to fit into a powder burner’s barrel.

Someone else will need to chime in on barrel liners?
