depending on make and model….

some is just a tube with an encap, push it into the frame.

others only slide a bit into the frame and has a bushing that grabs the barrel, and centers it

what makes the noise is the expanding air that has just pushed the pellet down the barrel, but is now released into the air, with a bang just like when a baloon pops….

a shroud extends over the barrel….capturing this noisy air, slowing it down before it wents out, like a mufler takes cars exhaust noice down to acceptable levels(ever hear a car without a mufler ?)….thus making the rifle much more quiet…to help slowing the air, baffels can be added for further air resistance, and even less noise….

some shrouds even make the rifle more accurate, by stripping the turbulent air from the pellet

The same way a muffler does. 😉
