Q:

How much larger will your shot group be at longer distances?

or if there is a formula for this, please advise. I know that a 1″ group will be 2″ @ 200 yards and so on, but what will a:

1/4″ group @ 16 yards be @32 yards? 48 yards? 96 yards?

I feel that there is little difference in short range shooting .

shooting 16 to 25 yards with a 20 yard zero would be less than a pellet with difference.

the pellets dont really start to open up signifigantaly until the range increases .

shooting at 16 yards wont tell you a lot about the ballistics of your pellets

So in my opinion, at that range, I would push for one hole groups in order to improve my shooting . breath control, trigger pull, heartbeat .

That will improve your shooting later on when you do get to the range to figure out your ballistics.

drop your power down to around 6-8 on your power wheel to get more consistant shots .

I know your question was pertaining to ballistics , but there is only so much you can do at 16 yards. I know ,I only have 20 yards myself!

But when I go to the range ,Im hittng targets out to 100+

I just started my sniper logbook and with a 20 yard zero shooting JSB 18 gr my drop at 35 yards is .40,

20 and thirty yards , I logged no difference.

I just shoot em, they either go where they are suppose to, or they are all over the place.

How does the ballistic coefficient figure in?
I see where a wad cutter will have a BC or 0.0100, a JSP exact BC 0.0320, Eun Jin 0.0350 and a Kodiak a BC 0.036 all in .22 caliber.

I think that a wad cutter having a flat nose causes it to destabilize sooner because it would slow down sooner and begin to tumble or cork screw. Like a guitar string some pellets probably have nodes where their are more in tune considering their velocity and distance of travel.

This is why external balistics is an entire field of study. 😉

Group sizes are a funny thing. In a perfect world, a gun that shoots 1moa should be 1″ at 100, 2″ at 200, to 10″ at 1000.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work like that. Some guns will shoot 1 moa at 100, but get dramatically worse longer away. Ammo can do this as well, stabilizing and destabilizing at different places. And of course small calibers don’t shoot out as far.

Another thing that is funny, some guns group better farther off than close. (moa wise) I think it has something to do with the big guns. Something like my old 300 rum (you listening synopsys?) will be big enough and the bullets going fast enough they don’t stabilize well at 100 yards. So say it does 1.5″ groups. But get it out to 200 and the bullets have stabilized, and then it shoots 2″ groups.

In other words, the only way to know is to shoot it and see.

When I test a new pellet for accuracy I like to go at least 30 yards. 16 is too close to judge anything but I have never see a JSB pellet shoot bad at long range. They have been the number 1 or 2 pellet in 90% of the rifles I have owned.

Thanks Jeff. I guess I am trying to figure out what is acceptable accuracy for groups @ my indoor 16 yard range. I am shooting consistent 1/4″ and sometimes 3/16″ ctc with my .22 24 inch barrel condor using JSB 18 gr. I am happy with this. I was wondering what this accuracy will mean at 50 and 100 yards. I guess I will have to find out.

Nope no formula you will just have to shoot and see. A gun that can group 1 inch at 100 yards may group 1.5 at 200 or 5 inches. Someone may be able to guess close but their is no constant increase or decrease in group size.
