Q:

How to clean/polish up the outside of a barrel?

My Cricket .25s barrel is that copper color.. It also has black smudges and even finger prints in the finish that won’t simply clean off. I see pics of blued barrels and polished steel ones..
How can I clean off the ugly finish? I want to take it to polished steel, at that point I’ll decide if I’d like to keep it that way or blue it. I’m guessing it won’t be as simple as taking a scotch-bright pad to it.. Or is it?
And for those who know- once the barrel is polished steel, is there some type of clear coat applied on it to deter rust/deterioration?

I was going to yesterday. Can’t find the turtle wax.. I will eventually. Looks much better.

Yep! Now go wax it with Car wax. Really – it will protect the shine. I actually used a Sealer on mine but the plain wax will do.

Break out the sunglasses! :biggrinn:

Told ya 🙂
The factory bluing is very thin so it’s fairly easy job. And if you get tired of the polished, stainless look you can reblue it, this time properly.

Looky here ladies at my sexy new bling bling.
BIG thanks to Ville.. I wouldn’t have bothered if he didn’t confirm taking scotch Brite to it would work.. And boy did it work!
I thought it would be tiring but it’s not guys. It did take about an hour.. I just watched tv while stroking it.. Uh… Yea.
Thank you for offering to do it for me Ernest. I would’ve taken you up on it if I didn’t need my gun this week.
Ok so all it took was- scotch brite, the green kind. That took it down to a brushed aluminum looking finish. I strop knives so I had some porter cable and Dico polishing compound lying around. That’s stuff is like a big crayon and costs $1-2 at Lowes. I rubbed the compound onto a microfiber cloth and started stroking the rod.. Again.. I thought surely this would take some time and muscle, but nope! It shined up very quickly! You can still see “brush” marks if you look at it.. So I’m going to go a step further today and bust out my Jewelers rouge and see how crazy I can get with it.

Ernest, I wish you lived in Poland or Europe in general :winkn:

send it to me I have all the lapidary machine to polish in grit step in 600, 1200, 3000, 8000, 50000 and will look like this: PM me if your up to it. light grease or oil will prevent it from rusting–over one year no rust or stain. even give you 1200 macro cloth to polish it up when you scratch it up!

That’s a .25 compact!

And it feels great when you have some blink blink to the Mix!

It´s exactly that simple : A Scotch Brite followed by Autosol or any other Polishing Agent/Paste. After you´ve rubbed it to a mirror finish you can either keep it oiled or use a good Car Vax / Sealer for long time protection.

The factory “bluing” is a joke.
