how to cut fibre infused plastics
i have been cutting some rc stuff for friends, and the material is usually plastic with fibers (sometimes carbon, sometimes glass) the edges tend to get frizzy and fold over, on gears theres no way of just sanding it down as it will ruing the teeth …..leaving me with an edge that can take forever to clean, is there a special edge i should make on my cutting bit ?

still machining…
my first hobbygrade car was kyosho burns, i had saved up for 2 years somewhere in the 1980’s being 13-14 years old…the burns had brass bushings and no wing… picked up a used turbo burns witch had a sleeker body, wing and bearings throughout, but otherwise the same, and other than stripping some motor mounts and spurs never broke a single thing !….then picked up a kyosho inferno in 1992 in canada…when i came back to denmark everyone had dropped nitro because of noise complaints, and where now driving onroad cars on carpets in school gym’s…fuck that…what where they thinking…inferno 60mph, 2+hp (OS best motor), nearly unlimited run time, just fuel and go.
the mini’s/sedans the guys where now racing was nicad’s….nicads suck…5 minute run time max…chargers and shit….fuck that
today im total converted back to electric…brushless motors hammer out more HP than nitro counterpart (at least in 1/8 scale), instant torque as well…no carb tuning just because it humid/cold/hot/windy/that time of the month/etc…..no more nicad/nimh ….lithium baby !!! now 10+ minutes in MOD is possible…30 minutes in stock 17.5…gear it right and just run…my non race cars can go 30 min on a charge…ditto most of my basher cars…plug and play…gotta love it…
i wish i had pictures of my kyosho’s but back then pictures where on costly film, costly to develop…and conserved for “important stuff” LOL…do have some video of it somewhere
Ha ! Fun fun fun …. sure came a long way since my Mataya Baja Bug w/ 6 cell 1200 nicad mechanical speed control and 2 ch. dual stick 75mhz AM Futaba . I remember my friends were flying for Great Planes (exclusive US Kyosho distributor) flying that fantastic plastic Concept .
They both were given the then new kit for a car called Turbo Burns …… man they caused a big fuss because these cars tore up the local atheletic field at the middle school down where we used to fly! GOOD TIMES
Congrats with your new setup. No more machining plastic? (UH,, I MEANT TO SAY, SPACE AGED FIBER REINFORCED SYNTHETIC MATERIALS)
have cut about 50 gears now….the steeper the rake the better…but damn the edge goes dull fast, 10 gears, and its time to sharpen up again…but it takes 5 min to sharpen and its good to go
just put a HB D413 wheeler together….machined steel gears…my goodness its a nice wheeler….at the track, i got 2 packs through it before qualifying, took my lap time from 16.1-16.5 sec down to a typical 16.0….during the main race i had a 10 lap avarage under 16.0 ! that buggy shaved ½ a sec off and thats without much practice with it…HB got a winner with this one, gotta dail it in a bit more to make it easier and more forgiving…but im betting i can shave another ½ sec off.
kyosho was my brand in denmark as it was the same price as losi etc….but now 20 years later they are 30+% more expensive, than the rest….and they are not 30% better….i’d rather have two AE B5’s than one ultima 😉
the D413 is a new buggy and a first for HB/hpi designed for racers….and it answered all the short commings of the B44.1….gear diff front and rear…and a center diff as well, all metal while still delivering a light buggy…with hpi prices ! (b44.1 is a super fast buggy, but you have to baby it to not strip a ring and pinion when landing on power…and with no center diff, if the buggy lifts the front, you have about a milisecond to back off the throttle or it will cartwheel down the straight tearing off a arms…..d413 center diff, unloads to the front the second the front wheels lifts off, effectively preventing high speed wheelies…..having metal gear diffs front and rear allows me to land on power preventing chassis slap, and simply shoots the buggy forward like it was shot out of a cannon…fucking awesome !
now if they could only get parts on store shelves it would be awesome
What is with all this fugg’n auto-matic double posting? 😕
Must really keep to the grindstone!
And there is your answer, and you didn’t even know it. Use high tech coated abrasives rather than edged cutting tools. That is how we do it in the Knife Business. 😉
How do ya think we make all those fancy folders with the carbon fibre handles?
Knife
Excellent guess! Because in the hands of the masses it was a flying vibrator. Team plastic fantastic brought rc helis to the masses with a plastic.
Uh mmmm I mean space age synthetic material rc heli that anyone bright enough to slap together an rc car could slap together an rc heli…. Kyosho Concept 30
Of course what do those old school guys know,,,, ya dont have to dial indicate everything or balance the rotorhead and blades. Just slap it together in one night, yeah because ya gonna crash it anyways. Oh Tsk Tsk!
Yeah always thought it seemed funny that the plastic gears would wear out metal gears so easily! Always thought it the other way around.
I can just imagine what that material does to your tooling there Cyg!
Must real keep to the grindstone!
A nitro fueled vibrator?
I really have no answer except to let them wear- in,,,, unfortunately once they wear in, they will finally wear-out…
I suppose thats not very funny but your question reminded me of the big mess that a plastic ,,, uhhhh um I mean space age synthetic material ring gear can make when you add an aluminium (light metal) pinion and burnt Bakers AA Castor Oil, NitroMethane and Methanol. Notably within the confines of a white polyethylene fuselage, add to that a leaky crankshaft bearing and burnt friction material.
What am I talking about?
to answer my own question, the internet tells me to make a bit with a lot of positive rake.
will know in a month or so when my next batch of stuff comes in

Good grief! Is that really that long ago and so archaic??? Seemed technology wasnt that long ago!
Yup I tripped out when I went to a hobby flying field and sawvall these guys flying without checking in on freq board! Spread Spectrum Radios and electric 1/4 scale and large FAI style Pattern planes flying on 6s LiPo’s !!! Where the hell had I been? Some kinda timewarp? Some of my best hobby mates all were met “on air” over conversations via Amateur Radio. All the best builders and pilots got their ham radio license so that they coild use radios on the ham bands instead of sharing on 72 Mhz here. I had all the best JR stuff (PCM 10) on six meters . With Modules ….
Dont even bother anymore. I fly a hacked Turnigy with the FrSky module and recievers. I only mess around with a hexacopter on APM 2.55 ( basically an autopilot)
Also I used to work in prepress for a newspaper doing colour seps on a old drum scanner. Input was usually color slide film (chromes) ouput was halftoned litho film color seperations that had to be stripped into the page layout before being burned to printing plates. No desktop publishing or digital files …. all film! Digital imaging …. ha ha ha that crap would never be high quality enough , memory would never be big enough, networks fast enough, processing fast enough to be practical!???? Ha ha ha how wrong we were. No more film and all my crafts antiquated!
Man I took it for granted all the chrome film I would get from work and have proccessed for free…..
Years later I am on an auction site and came across all kinds of highend pro slr camera gear for pennies on the dollar . I went crazy buying Nikon F1s and such only to realize how expensive and impractical it was to shoot film ,,, two montgs later Kodak announced the end of production of kodachrome!
Man Have I grown this old that I remember when pong came along and when my family got our first vcr? I remember my mom telling us when they got the first tv in her neighborhood. I am much too young to know wgatbit like to watch tv in b&w or turn the knob to change channels.
I am too young to know things so old!!!! Too young too young too young.
Fuckin Jimmy Page is going around and doing interviews in the media, was just made a honorary doctorate and speaker for commencement at Berkley School of Music!? !!! I am too young to see the times change this much!
Ok you can have your space aged synthetic materials . I will go back to nylon or plastic or even bakelite !!!! Good grief Charlie Brown are ya seeing all this?
