Q:

HW97K and fieldpods, part 2

Here are a couple groups from the rifle and foam/fieldpod setup. Mind you, this rifle has had under 100 pellets through it, so it’s not “settled in”.

Targets are one inch diameter, outside lines. I did drop the scope elev. a few clicks after the ten shot group, before the five shot group.

The rifle is extremely well made, quality German craftsmanship all the way

So far, this rifle has exceeded my expectations, not far from pcp accuracy at 35 yds. Plus, when I’m bouncing around in a utility vehicle, a springer is unlike a pcp bomb sitting next to you! I do like the pcps, but there will always be a place for springers around here.

Springers

quote JoeRhea:

His Hatsan 125 in 25 caliber is Luke chunking rocks . It sprays pellets in every direction .

.25 seems like too much for current springers. It’s hard to imagine dealing with the double recoil of something that strong. I almost went with .177, but need the capacity to “dispatch” larger rodents, like groundhogs.

Shooting here will be on hold for awhile. Those “part one” jungle pics, there’s a reason for the rampant vegetation: We’ve settled into a weather pattern of 88-100% humidity and temperatures in the 90s. Sweat doesn’t dry; metal corrodes from the air-without rain. I half expect to see a T, Rex wander by! Everyone driving with the AC running has to turn on their wipers because of the condensing air on the glass. Makes for some pretty spectacular clouds, lightning and thunderstorms.

I’ve been looking for an excuse to try some of the VibraDamp stuff they use on compound bows on one of my springers . It’ll take a fairly harsh bow and shut the vibration down to almost nothing . No idea if it would do any good on a gun though ?
The only guns I’ve had that weren’t really hold sensitive is my FWBs ( they all are recoilless) and the Beeman r7 and HW 30 …They are same gun .
My shooting buddy has a couple of ” magnum ” springers …I hate them , I can’t hit shit !!!! He shoots them all the time and has a hard time hitting a pop can at 30 yards . His Hatsan 125 in 25 caliber is Luke chunking rocks . It sprays pellets in every direction .
I keep trying to get him to hold off and get at least one nice spring rifle but instead he has a closet FULL of Walmart specials and over powered closeout rifles . He’s got at Least 2000$ worth is springers , and absolutely none of them I’d own on a dare 🙂
Can’t wait to see what that 97 will do when its stretched out a little

Thanks, Joe. The RWS 48 I have, also .22, doesn’t like any rest I have tried, except hand-held. I have not used the foam trick with the 48 yet, but am curious enough to try it. Dyotat built me a hammer of a .25 slug gun that, like the RWS, is very hold sensitive and only OK with the field pod; ditto with my .45 Bushbuck. I suspect any air gun with noticeable vibration or kick has accuracy reduction with pods. The usual pcps are lasers with them.

Like any technique, this one needed a consistent, light hold-light shouldering. The scope is only 3-9×40-setup for hunting, really. So there’s a visual impairment past 25 yds. when trying for tight groups.

It would be interesting to try using string, velcro tape, etc. to affix a piece of egg crate foam the the bottom fore grip and try it as a way to compensate for rest variety in the field, e.g. a fence rail, tree branch, top of forearm. The palm-up hold isn’t always comfortable or the best when in a very random environment.

And, the foam is dirt cheap or free :8:

Good shooting Man !!! Killer idea about the foam on the rest ! A buddies Diana is one of those that I think that’ll work for …It absolutely WONT shoot off my rest as hard as I’ve tried …But off one of those big bean bag type rests it shoots great ..
Man that’s a good looking gun . I keep looking at the new Walther LGV rifles and I know they are supposed to shoot well but they are ApeAss ugly !! That gun of yours is gorgeous.
I’m restoring that FWB I just picked up and when I’m finished I got a very ahrt list of what I wanna try next and the 97 on that list for sure !
I know guys compare it to a TX200 but the one I had left a bad taste in my mouth . I’m kinda over AirArms rifles I think .
